Hi everyone! My sister has received admits from: - Carnegie Mellon University Information Networking Institute MS in Information Security (CMU INI MSIS) - University of Wisconsin Madison (UW Madison) Traditional MS CS - Georgia Institute of Technology MS CS on campus Her offer from UW Madison includes tuition remission and a guarenteed TA position (she can switch to an RA position) with compensation. Her long term goal is to work as a Software Engineer. Which school would offer better job and research opportunities? Also, interested in hearing from alumni.
CMU ini is shit. Go for traditional CS. Congratulations on very good admits
CMU INI is absolutely not worth the cost. In the end it all depends of she can leetcode so doesn't really matter (assuming she wants to work in tech).
Madison is excellent.
Why does she even need a Master's? Is she international or did she major in something else as an undergrad?
She's international, bachelor's in Computer Engineering.
WisMad has excellent core CS program with excellent researchers in the fields of architecture, compiler and Databases. She will do well there.
GT will essentially mean a TA after sem 1 which means tuition waiver + stipend.
That's really good information to have. Thanks!
but still not everyone can get a TA
Madison top 10 school for computer science. CMU is excellent in this field but this program is not the core program there. GTech is also good for CS but go with one where you have guaranteed funding (ie Madison). Weather in Wisconsin sucks though, in case you are not familiar.
I went to UW Madison for MS and got the same kind of admit with tuition remission. DM me for more information.
Hi! Can I dm you? In similar situation..
CMU INI has no research option, so the traditional MS CS at GA Tech or Wisconsin would be better. All programs should get her interviews at the top companies, so her LeetCode abilities will matter more than anything else in job hunting. I'd advise picking Wisconsin since it's fully funded, although she should be able to become a funded TA at GA Tech with good grades in the first semester. Congrats!
One can do a thesis based masters at INI. There are scholarships but yeah funding is very limited.
@Bloomberg what do you think about a CE admit form CMU vs NCSU. (100k vs 55k) Want to make money as a SDE in the long run.
UW Madison please!! Do mot take any loans in the current market. Plus Madison is highly reputed. CMU and tech are shit expensive for no reasons. Never spend that much money on a degree. Go for the free education Madison is offering
