Got two job offers - Azure Solutions architect based in SF bay area california and another one is with Santa Clara County in California. Very confused - Please help me decide which one to take. Paid off home, spouse working too (TC 150K) Job 1: Azure - TC 360K, Pros - Cutting edge cloud job, customer interaction, growth, decent money, MSFT seems to be a employee friendly company Cons : Work Life balance, no job security, no retirement benefits Job 2: California Court system - Architect /Manager - TC 150K Pros - Les stressful work, State benefits, retirement benefits, job security Cons - Compensation (1/3rd) if considering RSU with MSFT, Govt. Bureaucracy, Politics Let me know your experience, suggestions and any data points I am missing ! #azure #countyofsantaclara #governmentjobs #microsoft #tech
Kids in college, and if you are not doing any personal goals or small business , then you are young enough to enjoy the pressure at MSFT.
I would say, if you're trying to retire in 10years and have a lot of money saved up already to retire, go with the job that is less stressful, so you can enjoy life more. You're at the stage where life is more important than money.
What you make in MSFT within 10 years will take 30 years for you to make (if not more) at CA county. And you want to retire in 10 years? Hmm..is it that difficult a decision? MSFT is considered a retirement company in my circle but YMMV!

Assuming your sign on stock, plus refreshers (I’m guessing 40k/yr to be conservative). Let’s say that’s about 5-600k over 10 years. If you don’t touch the stock and just hold it, i’d bet that stock will be worth more than the compete salary you take home from the govt job.
What’s your goal at the end of 10 years or 5 years financially, mentally and general life. Have those in mind and work backwards to see which position is best. “Want to retire in 10 years” is very vague. Narrow it down to a more granular level. Also be clear on what do you want to do after retiring? Travel, start your own business etc?
Microsoft. Work for a few years and if you dont like, leave it. Are you looking for pension through govt job?
