MSFT India to MSFT US

Hi, I am planning to join Microsoft India next month as a SWE 2 (L61/L62) and I am pretty excited about it. I have aspirations and dreams to moving to US (I know its not that amazing and India is great but I wanna go due to family). I know if you are lucky and spend enough time in a company, such as Amazon, you may get that chance. I used to work at Amazon IN but I was laid off cause JWO. Can someone working at Microsoft India, make this move in lets say 2-3 years or more if they perform well, keep their manager informed about these plans and lurk for opportunities. I very well know that the answer may be a big NO but I thought to just ask for opinions. Thanks in Adv TC: 42 LPA in IN YOE: < 3 #microsoft #usa #india

Don’t come on L1 and game the system. Stay where you are.

Why are you so insecure? There’s nothing to game here. This is one of most straight forward and legal ways to migrate to US. You guys act as if he’s asking suggestions to jump over the border.

Google sachin_rt Apr 13

Jumping over the border would entitle him to more benefits tbh 😂

It’s totally dependent on the team and the time. If your team doesn’t have headcount here they won’t move you. It’s also likely your team doesn’t even have anyone in US. Also be aware of L1 visa restrictions. You’ll also get stuck in Microsoft trying to do this. Which is not an issue if you’re happy.

The team I am joining is new in IN and there are folks in the US too. L1 restrictions, yea! Is H1B possible in your opinion?

Axon ashjdsjhd Apr 13

They’ll likely allow you to transfer if there’s a position in 2-3 years. Come on L1, I’m just saying don’t get stuck in Microsoft because of the US dream. If you get better opportunities or don’t like your work make a right decision. H1B is pure luck. Its getting difficult every year as the number of applications are increasing

Microsoft nwKU71 Apr 13

You need to be atleast L62 to transfer internationally

Thanks for the help man. I am hoping I join as L62.

I don't think L62 is possible with less than 3 YoE.

Stop lying, you want to come to the US for the money and the better quality of life, fewer people, lower pollution etc, just be aware that there are many areas in Seattle or San Francisco where people also defacate in broad daylight on the street. Other than that, go marry a US citizen (since you already have family here just ask them to set you up) and skip all the visa issues.

I've lived a pretty big life in US myself already. I like the life there but deep down I'm an Indian and I love India too. All the factors you mentioned are true lol! Also, I've already asked them. But let's see. Anyway, do you have any opinions to do this the corporate way. (PS: If I marry a US citizen, I'll set you up too)

From a professional perspective it depends on where you are in life. If you are willing/able for forego comp for a bit then I recommend to come over there on an F1 and get a Master's in a eng AI field or quantitative analytics, stay for OPT, and then H1-B from there (or get married). Don't sweat the selection of the school, prestige isn't a thing. Pick a place you want to live and that has decent local internship options. Also pick a place that isn't full of Indians already. You want to be 'other". You will learn more about life that way and you will stand out as "other" when it comes to hiring. As far as an Indian wife goes. It's the other way around. I would be the citizenship sponsor for her. I am as white as they come and have two 1st World passports. I have the highest respect for the women from India I have worked with. Highly educated, high general cognitive ability, no-nonsense, very direct. Absolutely love Indian women. On average far more educated than North American women. Just need to find one who isn't vegetarian...

Chances are very less. Unless you are extremely talented, highly experienced, exceptional. Otherwise why would company pay hefty amount on relocation and dollor conversion salary. Aren't they outsourcing more jobs in india due to low economy . If you have already worked with a US team you can ask them. But again they are not sponsoring L1 visa.

Your point is very fair. Thanks for the input. I'm not sure if I am that talented. But I am hardworking. If they value that, I will see where it goes. :)
