I'm currently working at AWS as a L6 PM-T ES and just got a verbal offer to join MSFT as a Principal PM 65. I have 10 YOE in Solutions Architecture and 5 YOE as PM. 8 YOE in total in Amazon. My TC back in April was $278k and now after stock drop is at $238k. I should also mention I've been working on a L7 promo however just got news one of the SDMs in the team is not inclined and without his support promo is not going to happen, I'm obviously pretty pissed off. MS offer: 210k base 225k RSUs over 4 years I have RSUs vesting by the end of this month so need to take some time to think this over, however MS is asking for an answer in 1 week at most. Considering my current situation in Amazon being low balled on both career growth and pay, looks pretty good IMO but would love to get more opinions before I make a decision. EDIT: After a call with the recruiter they mentioned the company is not allowing increases to base or shares due to the bad economy and inflation. Got offered an increased to the sign on bonus to $100k total though. Noticed some people mentioned stock is low, which I agree. But considering the stock is almost as low as pre-pandemic levels, when did folks get better offers? Are we seeing companies offering 300k-400k+ to Principals recently in this economy? Hard to believe any company would be offering big stock grants with the stock market as bad at it is now.
Stock looks low.
Please negotiate. It’s a principal role and offer looks like senior pm.
Yeah, recruiter told me there's no "wiggle room" due to the bad economy. But I'll definitely negotiate, see what happens.
I think they are just using that as an excuse. Let us know how it went. Good luck!
I’ve learned that moving between companies every few years is the best way to increase your pay. Internal raises and promotions don’t keep up. If you like the role, accept it and negotiate a 12/1 start so your RSUs vest.
The offer is low. L6 PMT, had a similar final offer for L63 (~10% less) which I turned down eventually. MSFT has external recruiters which are pretty bad. They also told me there is no wiggle room, but I told right away I wouldn’t take the original offer so they bumped it by 25%
Take it and boomerang later. I did this last year - I'm <200k above my previous salary in the current market!
You mean >200K?
Stronk maths
L65 might be low for you. I interviewed for L64 but was downleveled to L63 due to “lack of impact”, whatever it’s supposed to mean. But I don’t even have 2 years of PM experience.
How did you get into Amazon with less than 2 years? Please share your journey with me.
My SPM offer at LI had over 3x the RSUs as this. With higher base.
When did you get your offer, is it recent?
Ask for 400k stock over 4 years
No luck, tried to negotiate but according to the recruiter no increases to base or stock are authorized due to inflation and bad economy. All I got was a sign on bonus increase.
Dont take it. Sorry to hear about your promo process. L7 used to be a very high bar but it seems to be declining. As L6 PM you will learn more and will have larger impact than Principal PM at MS. You will be sought after growing companies vs at MS you will sought after by companies who cant lure amazon PM.
Been an L6 PM in Amazon for a very long time, had enough. Time to experience something different.
Trying to understand why a PM with experience in 2 of the largest tech companies in the world won't be "sought after" though?
