M&T Bank TDP vs Big4 Solutions Engineer Analyst

I have 3 days to decide if I should renege on a Big4 for M&T Bank's TDP. I studied CS in college and am a recent graduate. I hope to pursue SWE in the future so I'm worried that staying with a Big4 and doing tech consulting is going to pull me away from the path. Which is the better choice for my career down the road? I don't want to go to Buffalo NY (in fear of having a worse social experience) but I'll tank it (if it's better for my future and money progression). Here's my pros and cons list: M&T Bank: Pros: ⁃ tdp engineer (2 years) -> swe so definite coding work, better job title, easier to transition to other swe roles ⁃ low cost of living (rent: 1.2k for a house) ⁃ 3 day house hunting all paid for (food, hotel, flight, etc) ⁃ better work life balance Cons: ⁃ older people, smaller bank, outdated tech ⁃ buffalo, ny (boring/small city) ⁃ move away from parents and friends (too far) Big4: Pros: ⁃ better reputation ⁃ more people closer to my age ⁃ higher salary (but also a higher cost of living area) ⁃ close to family and friends Cons: ⁃ role: solutions engineer analyst -> consultant (id be on a 2 year time crunch to find another swe role) ⁃ likely to go the business route (consultant, manager, partner, mba, etc) ⁃ if economy stays bad (ie next two years), i could get laid off ⁃ high cost of living (rent: 2.1k for a studio) ⁃ consulting lifestyle - networking to get on projects and being on the bench for too long means you get cut ⁃ unsure of career path #engineering #software #swe #mtbank #big4 #pwc #kpmg #deloitte #ey #tdp

I’m a tdp at a bank. Life is good and work is chill. I’m learning a good amount at a comfortable pace.

hey i recommend NOT coming here. the tdp program here is not on par with other companies, what is said is not what is done. it’s just lies on lies. but biases aside, m&t is the better choice.

Despite what you think. You actually can end up in a different the than SWE. Your rotation is entirely dependent on what manager wants you or wants you to do. Hence people leave the first year because it'll be some bullshit rather than SWE work.
