Current TC - 230k+lots of paper money at a startup in a role I really like but the company is shaky. Work at Twilio is interesting but offer seems low. Role is Staff MLE. Unfortunately no competing offers atm. 8 YOE.
People on here really thinking an 85k bump is low
They can afford to lowball you because they know you are currently at a trash tier company. Get competing offers if you want the hiring manager to get serious about the negotiation. You and I can check levels.fyi, so can hiring managers and recruiters.
Didn’t know twilio has such low comp for staff equivalent positions, especially for MLE. This comp is like L4 equivalent package at some companies. You may want to interview more.
Take it if you don't have a better choice, with Twilio staff mle eng on your resume, you are on track to earn 500k+ on next job
With lowball offers when you don’t have other offers your only choice is to make it up. Lie and tell them you have another offer which is better. Check our levels.fyi. Tell them that they are your favorite company, but you can’t leave money on the table. If they don’t offer more, tell them you decided to join regardless the pay cut as you love them.
Buddy check levels.fyi and h1bdata on staff offers at twilio and do some negotiation. People were getting $475K staff offers at Twilio in VHCOL, or at least in the $400Ks in this markets. $315K feels super low ball unless you're in LCOL like Montana or something
Twilio staff is actually a senior swe level. AFAIK, they giving max around 400k. To get more like old days, you need to get approval from vp level
Twillio is a shit show we had 2 rounds of layoffs and mgmt has no clue on how to develop a software product. Go elsewhere.
A few things are important: 1. Are you anywhere but HCOL area? If so that plays a part. 2. The market has absolutely changed. It'll be a while before the old insane offers are common again, if ever. $315k is a lot of money. 3. As someone else mentioned, Twilio staff is more like snr SWE. It's more like L5/E5 at Google/Meta. Given the expected scope and changing market conditions, as long as you're not in a HCOL area this is a fair offer. You're getting almost a 50% bump in real money.
