What does machine learning engineers do in those big tech companies? It seems the requirements are really high (phd or strong ml background, coding and system design), but I’ve heard some of them are just training the same model hundreds of times with different parameters. Is there some companies/teams where there are more real coding from data wrangling, feature engineering to model selection/training/evaluation to shipping to product?
I do ml at FB. It varies. Some teams build platforms, some teams do researchy stuff, some trams work directly on products. More established teams already have their etl and systems set up, so the job is tweaking and experimenting. Other teams have nothing, so the job is gathering product requirements, architecting, etc
Hi! Do they require PhD in ML? I have been working on anything around data, including data pipeline, metrics, quality, data api, data modeling, bi & dashboard, and some ranking&ml. The work experience shows that even for ml, data and feature are the most important factor, even the model we use is simple. Wanna try ml engineer in fb but not sure if my skill set is enough for this role, or should I simply apply for software engineer. Thanks in advance!
Nope. I work in a ML team and we have Undergrads, Masters and PhDs. If you apply as a ML engineer, make sure you can answer ML design questions well.
FLAG?!
The Chinese acronym
Actually I like FLAG. If it refers to Facebook, LinkedIn, Airbnb and Google, it’s definitely more consistent than something like FAANG or MAGA, in term of almost all major aspects except company size.
How should one develop their own profile to become attractive for these sort of positions ? Any advice from someone already doing this sort of work in FLAG would be great !
Wtf is the L
