Management gets mad if you work weekends?

My manager is getting pissed off if I do work on the weekends. I think he may be worried if do this, then it would be expected that others do so as well. I’m a fairly isolated individual with no family or social life, so I don’t really mind working OT and racking up the points. What do you all think? Is this a toxic act by me by kind of cheating in a way (more hours worked) to get ahead? Not at Equifax anymore. TC: $🥜

Probably doesn’t want you to burn out. This is a good sign. Take your weekends to relax and refresh, you do better work that way.

I’m not doing massive work on the weekends. I’m just doing maybe 10 hours over the whole thing. I don’t really have much else to do anyways unless I just use that time to LeetCode

10 hours on the weekend is a lot. I’d say under 2 hours is “minor”

Yes! You are ruining it for everyone.

Can you explain with logic supporting this?

You are starting the toxic cycle when everyone else starts to feel the pressure to work more. Everyone starts working more to match the next person. Before you know it, working weekends and long hours will be the norm.

It can annoy people to get emails or alerts if a teammate is working on weekends. May be don’t show you’re working weekends. Set yourself inactive on chats, don’t send email until Monday 9 A.M. Commit code only at Monday 9 a.m. Show manager that you’re only working Monday-Friday 9-5

I do all of this except for setting chat to inactive. Is that really necessary?

Equifax ninh50 OP May 4, 2022

We have a senior dev ops engineer that stays active 24/7 and responds anytime of the night pretty much. He is also one of the most loved employees here, so I think that is a little too much to set chat to inactive for no reason

You aren’t getting ahead or racking up points. You are demonstrating poor time management and WLB to such an extent that your manager had to say something about it.

I agree. That was my suspicion which is why I made this post.

You're donating 10 hours of your personal time to the company per week every week. That's like tens of thousands of dollars a year, depending on how much you value your time. Now don't get me wrong. You may be doing it out of the goodness of your heart. But remember that the company will dump your ass in a heartbeat whenever it wants, if it wants.

Equifax ninh50 OP May 4, 2022

That’s fine. The main reason I’m doing it is to learn more, because I’m getting to work on new libraries that I’m not experienced in. Thank you for pointing out they would drop me in a heartbeat however. I think I will just LeetCode instead in case of this.
