Manager is asking me to handle workload of a lead engineer but hired me as junior developer

This year I took an internal transfer G8 to G8 within cisco team and i was not given any promotion since i was new to the domain(as per them, although i have enough experience to be able to work as senior developer, 6+ yrs). Recently they have let go a principal dev with whom i was working before. Now I’m the only one in the team and they expect me to handle everything. I wont mind doing all the extra work but i don’t see any appreciation or any hint from my manager that they can promote me sooner than later. Due to this I’m putting off majority of the work and its hitting my reputation in the team. I have conveyed this to him that unless I’m being promoted, I’m not comfortable handling all the extra tasks. He listens to it and then come back with more additional work. A***ole!! I’m looking to get out now and want to do limited work, so that i can get out quickly. Looking for advices on how to handle stuff while I’m preparing to leave. TIA!

Either go the path or pay me or I'm gone. But that's the nuclear option and you need to be mentally prepared for many dirty office tricks from him. Or just take out PTO or holidays etc. Let some barns burn, let some SLAs breach etc. And / or just simply look for a new job. They won't look out for you and you should've taken the hint of the principal dev that already left, so yes that what you gonna do eventually. So leave now before you are burntout or you will do anyway but with much less positive energy and any enthusiasm.

I was at Cisco for a few years and sadly I've seen similar things happen. For me the only way I was able to get away was to come to Amazon. People talk about how toxic Amazon is, but in my experience, Cisco is way more toxic. Amazon has been an upgrade.

They don’t talk about how Cisco is toxic, because no one talks about Cisco… Amazon gets hate, because they’re part of the conversation

Amazon is a toxic shithole, but they pay well. If someone wanted me to do more than 20 hours/week of work while getting paid shitty Cisco wages, I'd tell them to fuck right off.

It's a good thing you are applying elsewhere because you have put yourself on the layoff list the next time Cisco makes cuts (and it will). Good luck, OP; there are multitudes of companies less toxic than Cisco.

Similar experience here as well. We were an acquired startup by Cisco. Won't take the name of the startup. The startup had an issue where a couple or some 3-4 of them were taking up brunt of tasks and some others were chilling. Even after Cisco acquisition it was the same scenario. I used to tell that we need to set an example by say taking some action on a couple of them but that never happened and work kept coming. Eventually jumped ship to a better place. They tried retaining walls and I told it's not going to happen 😃

Meraki?

Do the bare minimum to not get fired immediately. Use this time to practice and interview. They're either managing you out by overwhelming you with tasks or they thought they could save money by having you tackle the extra work. Either way no future with that team.
