Hi all, I'm not sure how to handle this situation. My manager has been at Google for about 2 years. I have been here for less than a year. Our experience is about the same number of years. Lately I've noticed a big change in her attitude. She hardly speaks to me. This significantly increased when I got invited to a leadership meeting to listen in. I could tell that really pissed her off. I have been asking for opportunities to present to leadership and have always been told there's no need. I feel that she does that to take advantage of leadership exposure and be able to show that "she knows everything". Wtf. Prior to that we were discussing perf and it was made very clear that I'm not NI but likely between CME or EE. Because it's my first perf rating (prior to that was NA since I had just started), it would be very hard to justify anything higher than EE, as I'm told. So, I'm trying to figure my next steps out. Is this one way ticket out of Google? I love the company but I'm starting to feel stressed more about what she's thinking even when I'm not at work. I don't think it's fair and I dont think I'm overstepping. I was responsible for certain areas and have been delivering. I get along well with my team. Should I start looking outside of Google? Being my first perf, and less than a year it's too early to move within Google, so really not sure how to proceed. TC = 180K (Not compensated for higher workload). Not engineering.
This is a very very common scenario in most companies. You should definitely change teams asap. Or get yourself heard to higher ups only if you can save your head.
Tldr come to facebook Long version: google is big and slow now and bureaucracy is expected. You dont need to work or think as hard. Take a step back and enjoy. Dont try to drive at 65mph when the speed limit is only 40mph
Interesting. What is different at FB that it can have a higher speed limit and less bureaucracy?
She will fuck you, start fuck her from now don’t waste a moment.
You sound needy. How often are you asking for these things? It’s probably getting annoying.
In about 12 months, I've asked to join one meeting when I found my counterpart (my level) not my manager was in that meeting. The second was the invite directly to me.
How did you ask? Maybe that particular meeting was none of your business. I am more worried about this: “This significantly increased when I got invited to a leadership meeting to listen in. I could tell that really pissed her off. I have been asking for opportunities to present to leadership and have always been told there's no need. I feel that she does that to take advantage of leadership exposure and be able to show that "she knows everything". Wtf.” Was the invite given by your manager? If you did not go through your boss, or at least get the ok, that’s an issue. What are you trying to present to leadership? She’s right, you should wait until there is a “need”. The rest of your post sounds like you are trying to do her job for her, while thinking you know better. That will get real annoying to her really quick.
change your team. stay at Google if you can change the team
Is EE that bad ???? In any case looks like you definitely need a change of team
I spent 10 years at Google. It became this toxic in the last 2-3 years. They are too bloated and have too many type-A millennials who constantly step on each others toes. I disagree that every company is like this - Google wasn't like this until around 2013-14. The golden handcuffs aren't worth it. At all.
