Using my alternate account for more anonymity. I gave my 2 weeks notice, and my manager asked me to wait a week to inform my team and peers so they can notify the proper channels first. I don't feel right pretending to my team for a week. It also screws them because they can't adequately prepare. I have stuff to transition to them, so I either need to cut transition time in half or just start doing it without an explanation, which will surely let them know something is up. What would you do? Edited to add I'm middle management, not an executive or anything.
Thatās a really odd ask. Make sure youāre LinkedIn connected to your coworkers just in case. Iāve had people disappear suddenly and I always wondered what happened to them.
It seems like a way for them to try to control the narrative. The primary reason I'm leaving is my boss being unsupportive and downright awful. I'm sort of wondering if they might try to give me pay in lieu of notice after a week and then tell the team it was their decision or something.
Are you consulting or contractor ?
No, I'm a full-time employee with a small team of <5.
The manager is the one who will be dealing with the aftermath. Respect their wishes, perhaps with some light pushback.
it doesnāt really matter, if ur manager wants to wait a week fine. ur coworkers going to forget u anyways so I donāt think u need to worry about it, they will figure out whatever they miss.
This is totally normal. On several occasions Iāve worked out my two weeks, left on the last day and still management told no one. Iāve had people email my personal account weeks later asking where I was ā¦ just bad management. Also If they offer you a raise AFTER you quit then you know you did the right thing. They could have offered you before you quit, but nope, they didnāt.
Give your manager the benefit of the doubt and wait. He is, after all, your future reference.
I'd listen to your manager. Your peers and team will have a lot of questions and could feel a little lost/abandoned when you tell them. Best to wait for the company to have as many answers and reassurances as possible.
Yeah agreed. If you tell them and management doesn't have a transition plan yet (I.e. who will they report to) then the management looks dumb and your team will be stressed they don't have their shit together. Just use the time to prepare transition materials.
Thanks for the perspective. I would be fine waiting a couple days, but a week seems unnecessary. I would think they'd feel more lost/abandoned if I spring it on them next week and say, I'll be gone in 5 days so get anytime you need now.
