After being an IC for over 10 years, I moved into to a management role at a new company. The company is a well known (tech tier 4/5) bank. My team is extremely lazy, insubordinate, and writes poor code. The company is very political (it’s who you know - not what you know). Complaining doesn’t seem to do much. My own manager (who is somewhat uninterested) says - document everything and we’ll give bad ratings to poor performers/insubordinate team members. Well, Performance Evals are a whole year away (November 2023). Been at the company for 2 months and it’s hard. I want to transfer to a new team or move to a new company. It's not only your team now.. it's majority of the teams in majority of the companies.. Now go motivate them and build their careers.. that's why you became a manager.
If I could fire half of the team, the remaining half would make a perfect team. It’s just a few toxic engineers that mess up the team.
^ not toxic at all
I don’t think you can change the entire culture. Just leave and look for a position at somewhere more tech-oriented
There are companies that aren't like that?
People are naturally lazy. You’re not doing your job right
There should be inter company manager swap options in the industry 😅
It would be great to be able to do dry runs at companies as an experienced engineer (not contract2hire that only benefits the company) before quitting and screwing over your career.
Threaten to fire them or give poor evaluations
Live and let live.. 😂
To motivate ppl you have to fire some .
Then you’ll stuck with engineers with critical knowledge who have all the power
Agree with the comments here. Isn’t that your role? If the answer is to fire half the team or people you hate to build a dream team….
Then you’ll stuck with engineers with critical knowledge who have all the power
To save the team, letting the lazy/troublemakers go may be the only real option here. It’s fine to be stuck with engineers who are pleasant and humble. Not insubordinate and lazy. Besides, the applications that we work on are not too complicated.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Looks like you’re getting paid for exactly these kinds of situations. As a manager, it’s upto you to find ways to motivate your team
This. Especially given that you have been with the company for only 2 months
