Mathworks EDG

What’s it like at Mathworks in EDG? I’ve heard its not good for career growth and you can get stuck in application support. I feel the first year or two spent doing support work can greatly hinder your growth as an SWE. I get that it’s to learn the product and stuff like that, but I’m not sure if that’s helpful if you don’t plan to stay long term. Any thoughts? TC: 0

Its not great but it helps to get an H1B if you’re having trouble finding sponsors. Stable company I think

its a very stable company. Pay is low but WLB is insanely good. EDG is okayish but as a fresh grad, it shouldnt affect long term oppurtunities at Fang.

It depends on your priorities. I'd say it's pretty good for career, as it gives you a year or two to decide which team or area within MathWorks you would want to move to. Lot of internal hiring from EDG. Pay is crap and the job is glorified tech support. MathWorks pay is pretty bad for Boston geo. The work can be good depending on which team you join. Stable company. Their immigration process is bad too.

What do you mean by “Their immigration process is bad too.”?

They delay H1 and GC processing as much as they can. GC processing needs additional approvals. Most companies takes care of these day 1.

By being in EDG you are throwing away a lot of valuable time by not focusing on software engineering skills. Half of the time it is technical support. It is really annoying and stressful - my manager was unhappy if a customer rated me 3/5 or 4/5. Support may be okay for improving soft skills and maybe time management. If you want to move to an engineering team, the EDG manager may not allow you, and force you to stay in a EDG for 6+ months, and many people stay usually at least 12-18 months. There is also no exit interview, they don't care about your feedback to the company. In my time outside work I kept working on hobby projects and doing Leetcode and studying system design. I decided to leave to a startup for a higher pay, better culture where I felt more respected and valued.

Was your position based in USA?

MathWorks wick Jan 31, 2023

No, Cambridge, UK. My pay was £41k when I left in 2020. My teammates were nice people, I enjoyed working with them. Maybe I just didn't have such a good experience, I'm not sure. We were about 12 EDGers managed by 2 EDG managers. Many teammates didn't seem to mind the work. I know two other people who like me also really didn't like working in support. EDIT: I really liked MW 35 year anniversary in 2018, paid flight, hotel and company events. I wonder how 2023 event will be like.

MathWorks hardwork2 Jan 31, 2023

Everyone who's saying the pay is crap they were offering new grads 150k last year

Isnt pay determined by education level? That’s what the recruiter said. Were those new grads master or phd grads?

MathWorks hardwork2 Jan 31, 2023

Yes, they were graduate students

MathWorks hardwork2 Jan 31, 2023

It depends on what you want to prioritise, from my time here I could see that people could work here for their whole lives. It's an insanely stable company, no layoffs, decent benefits, excellent work life balance. And the pay isn't too bad for a new grad.

That’s good to know, thanks! I’m not too concerned about pay, I’m just worried about staying too long in app support and the consequences later on in my career if I want to go to a different place.
