Mathworks offer negotiation

I am looking to return to Mathworks after a brief stint at Amazon (very very burnt out by the toxicity). When I initially joined MW as a new hire, I was severely low balled and I was not given any room for negotiation. I want to know if that is still true? My hiring manager (also my ex boss) desperately wants me back, so I definitely have the upper hand here. So would Mathworks negotiate an offer under those circumstances? #mathworkscompensation #mathworkshiring

I had managed to negotiate a pretty decent comp right before I left. Mainly because I threatened to leave. But I’ll take the slightly lower comp over the insanity that is big tech. My mental health just cannot handle Amazons toxicity right now. I am just looking to see how far MW is willing to negotiate, even though I’ll most likely not match my Amazon TC

yaa .. mental health is the most imp... good luck with the negotiation

I'm dealing with this with my old company (large SI). Want me back hard (been going 3 years but keep asking me to come back) but won't even match current pay but I'll work 80+ hours. No thanks. What did Jerry McGuire say?

You def have the upper hand with the manager, but they may not have the req. Leadership has been really stingy this last year. Almost no new reqs approved. Unless a req already exists, it’s unclear the manager will have much wiggle room. However, if it does exist, they will want to fill it before they lose it, which gives you leverage. Then you just need to figure out the band and see if there’s room for you to be higher in it. Also your rating! Make sure you don’t get reset to a 3. The big uncertainty the manager will have to get past will be “won’t this person just leave again for higher TC at some company besides Amazon.” You can try to frame the negotiation around why it will leave you happy for a couple years at least. Maybe you could tie the TC to a personal need (idk, family) rather than just ego to make the premise that you’re now satisfied more believable to the stakeholders.

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. The req exists and it’s for a product that I have worked on in the past. We really are in advanced stages of our discussion, just that I haven’t spoken to HR yet (although I have spoken to my manager almost daily since the process started). I think framing the negotiation around wanting to stay put at MW is the path I am going to take. Comp really was the main reason I left any way. Also question, if I join back in less than a year, does my previous tenure still count? I was promoted like a month before I left MW so I am hoping I should be rehired at the same level?

I thought the return had to be within six months to for certain not reset, but I’m sure that’s something you could negotiate because it’s low up front cost to MW. So for salary: try to figure out your band. For levels E1-E3, Glassdoor is a pretty close estimate. If you are recently promoted into that band, you can’t really target higher than 40% of the range, and if you’re chasing a promotion out of it, folks tend to top out around 70%. Then you can set a reasonable target based on a target range within the band. Or if your current comp is higher than any of that, use that and at least be aware what you should be ok settling for.
