I am currently an intern at Mathworks and I like the work well enough. I live in Mass so would have to move away from family to take the Amazon offer (requested Boston). Mathworks return: 120k base 7k sign on bonus Unknown stakeholder bonus (maybe like 10% of base?) ~127k first year TC Amazon NG: 141k base 44k/36k first 2 years sign-on 122k stock 7k relocation ~194k TC 4yr avg Is the TC/FAANG name worth the VHCOL of NYC? I am also not super thrilled at the idea of technical support that comes with EDG at Mathworks but it probably as much better wlb. I am leaning towards Amazon but curious if there is anything else I should consider. TC: $35/hr
No way you will get 10% bonus on base in year 1 at Mathworks. Or even in year 2. Year 1 in EDG is to get you placed into a team. Year 2 you will be ramping up in a new team. First 6 mo, zero bonus. You’re not eligible. Your first bonus check will be like $2K before taxes. You’ll think it’s a mistake. Year 2 you have to worry about finding a new team. Later on, you’ll be lucky to get 8-10% the first couple of years. Mathworks pay, bonus, and promotion cycles are notoriously sucky. Read the reviews. Stay away from Mathworks if you can. Anything is better. You don’t like your Amazon RSUs? 122K stock vs. maybe 40K Mathworks cash bonus over 4 years? You know RSUs potentially appreciate, right? Are you bad at math or something? Go find full time software engineers at Mathworks and ask them this question. They will laugh in your face. Also, you answered your own question: “am also not super thrilled at the idea of technical support that comes with EDG at Mathworks” Take any other offer if you want a career as a software engineer.
Wow, I have been at mathworks for 7 years and disagree with most of what you said. EDG as a starting point puts you at a disadvantage, but if you are a high performer on a good team you will rise through the ranks at MW. Amazon is notorious for being pretty much the worse tech company to work for in every aspect except pay. Amd that isn't a very high offer for amazon.
What do you disagree with? And what are the ranks you speak of? 5 years for a promotion? At least, at Amazon, you learn transferable tech skills: AWS, etc.
Do not go to MathWorks EDG <period> You will find EDG to be a pain and some notorious managers are there who shouldn't be. If you are gambling, take the Amazon gamble. It will pay in the long run multi fold.
What education level are you? I didn't realize EDGers were getting that high of return offers
The 70k TC difference and more importantly the FAANG name will go a long way in your career down the road. Take Amazon offer. And skip to another big name company (Meta/Goog) in 3-4 years. Then move to mid or smaller firm as staff or principal.
Is the TC difference that big considering it’s NYC?
Tc doesn't compensate for living in NYC.
