Hi All, I passed Amazon on-site but got down-leveled from SDEII to SDEI. I don't blame Amazon for this. I just got some pretty hard graph questions including Cracking the Safe and I did not do so well. Nonetheless, they are inclined to hire me and have been looking for a team. They have connected me with a few recruiters. I also passed MathWorks on-site waiting on background checks and referrals. I am still waiting on NetApp on-site results. I did a few other on-sites and in most cases I almost made it. For example, with Waymo, I passed all interviews but not all interviewers approved me for L4. One interviewer approved me at L3. So they did not make an offer but want me to try again for L4 in 6 months. Cruise saw very strong potential but thought I am not a good fit for the role after one interview. I've kept in touch with the recruiter. I am also in Google's frozen pipeline. I passed the phone screen 5 weeks ago. I have very strong referrals from Googlers because I've done a few internships with them. However, I don't expect that on-site will happen this year. Probably beginning of next year. I am also on F1/OPT visa and Mathworks is a stable company that will sponsor me for a green card in 1 year. That means I will need to stay with them for at least 2 years. I liked the people on the team I interviewed for and the work is C++ on the Matlab core which is a valuable skill for the future. I can also wait on Amazon to find a team. However, fear of Amazon's toxic culture and the looming recession might not be a good place to start. What's your opinion? Should I go with MathWorks or should I interview more or wait for Amazon? LeetCode ~600 now. When I took Amazon on-site it was ~300. TC: 0 MathWorks TC: 150K base plus 6% bonus first year after 10-12% bonus. Amazon expected TC: 160-200k. #tech #offers #interview
Ex-MW here. Their wlb is super chill. But this early in ur career I’d choose amazon. Simply because of the learning opportunities and the doors it will open for ur next job.
What was your experience switching from MW to other companies? When you applied, did MathWorks positively or negatively impact your resume? Did recruiters contact your while at MW?
I switched in 2021. It was a great time for SWEs then, so no issues with getting interview calls.
TC offer details? these are the rules.
I just got the TC from MW today. Updated the post.
As a private company, MW gives out zero equity. It’s a sore issue among many employees. The low cash bonus does not compensate for the lack of equity. You need to factor in the equity. That’s the biggest value of working for Big Tech. Add in the numbers for equity from Amazon. That’s what you need to be comparing. Also search previous posts on Mathworks and read the reviews here and on the other site. 10-12% is optimistic. Is there a percentage written in your offer letter? Or the recruiter told you that? You may not get more than 8-10% the first few years
One important question. How much hand holding do you like/want? At MW, you will be micro-managed. If you’re a docile and obedient worker bee, your manager and queen bee will be happy with you. Amazon; you have to be more of a go-getter. Also, it is optimistic to think you will get your GC in 1-2yrs.
The team I talked to and the managers did not look like micro-managers. They actually looked for someone who can do work independently. They asked my references about this. Why do you think it is optimistic to get my GC in 2 years? I am from a country that has no backlog.
How long did waymo take to give feedback/result after on-site?
6-7 business days after the on-site.
Welcome to MathWorks! Trust me, you will have a good time here :)
Thank you!!! I am very excited and I know the team is as well.
Mathworks pays 🥜
MathWorks would be about 130k plus the quarterly bonus which is about 6%. Amazon would be 160k-200k.
Amazon L4 is definitely closer to 200k now, even for non premium cities.
