I am hoping/expecting for an offer from Okta in the next week or so, for the role of Associate Technical Consultant. They asked for a comp range and I don't want to shoot myself in the foot. Apparently the role only guarantees 80% minimum of base salary depending on "utilization", which is mostly out of the consultants control. I do not live in SF Bay, Seattle, LA, NYC, etc. I am in a comparatively LCOL area so I doubt I can squeeze them for a crazy TC like I see on Blind. Based on this, I was hoping for a base of 130k to pad for the odd pay structure, worst case scenario. But 130k seems high for an associate role and I dont want to come off as greedy. I do have about 5 years experience and a MS degree, but degree and about 3 of those years of experience are in an adjacent but not totally related field. Is 130k too high to ask for? if so, what should I start at?
You can definitely ask for 130k if that’s what you’d be happy with
I guess the question is will the recruiter balk at a number if it is too high and stop negotiations
Nah recruiters will just let you know if it's above the band
Seems reasonable
does Okta have to give candidates a range or a ceiling if they ask as they are headquartered in CA (per the law that passed somewhat recently)? or is that only for candidates who are CA residents?
Update. offer recieved, I never gave a single number. seems low: 95k base (76k + 19k variable) 40k RSU (4 year vest, 25% each yr) forgot what the bonus was, may be tied to that variable component, but I was honestly surprised to hear such a low base and got distracted. Location: Scottsdale, AZ (pricier than PHX) YOE: 5+ including time in legacy tech (Intel, IBM), about 2 years in modern cloud tech Degree: MS Engineering (Non CS related) That 130k base I mentioned asking for is over a 70% increase above offer and seems unlikely. what should I counter with for base? I would not mind giving up some RSU if that helps...
(probably gonna post this as offer eval later)
Honestly keep the rsu. The stocks only gonna do better I think. You can probably ask for a base of 90 and see where the recruiter settles. Note the offer recruiter has made would be on your interview performance as well and based on the range for your location thereafter.
Levels.fyi. also with 5yoe 130k is fine
levels is great and has plenty of data points for those with a very common job title at a huge company (ie SDE at a FAANG) and whom live in a major hub (SF, Seattle, NYC, LA, etc). but the data can be very sparse for many others.
