Seems crazy steep how does one find roommates

That's max? For 300 TC? I'm 230 and pay 3600 (plus parking). It's my only big bill and it's worth it for me. OP I'm not saying 3k is cheap or throw away money. But it's easily affordable on 300 TC with plenty left over to save $$ unless you have some crazy debt or family obligations I'm unaware of.

Budget rent based on cash comp, not equity (yes, even if it’s a public company)

Like 170 then

So take home (assuming standard tax and maxing out 401k) might be around $8k? I try to keep rent around 30% or less of take home, so $2.4k max. Pre COVID my rent was $1.8k with roommates. Look in Potrero Hill. Also you can find roommates on craigslist or post to FB and IG to see if your friends or friends of friends might have a room open. Saving money for travel or investments is way more important IMO. Don’t commit to burning an extra few $100s in rent, especially when you’re locked into a one year lease, if you don’t have to. Low rent makes your budget much more flexible

A popular standard for budgeting rent is to follow is the 30% rule, where you spend a maximum of 30% of your monthly income before taxes (your gross income) on your rent. This has been a rule of thumb since 1981, when the government found that people who spent over 30% of their income on housing were "cost-burdened."

This definitely applies in the bay area....

I was paying 2k for studio in civic center before covid. Hated it. Either splurge the 3+k a month for a decentish place or grab a few roommates (use Facebook groups) for like 1.7k a month rent

The city is small and those offices are located in garbage areas. Find a livable neighborhood like Duboce.

Yeah please don't live by these offices OP
