Maximizing the effect of referral

Jul 9, 2019 8 Comments

Hey Blind, I’m looking to apply for APM positions in the next few months and since referrals are a good way to increase the chances for an interview I was wondering a few things:
1. Does it make a difference if you have multiple people from a company refer you to the same role?
2. Does the position of the person that referred you matter? So does a referral from an intern hold the same weight as a referral from a senior PM for example?
3. Does it matter if the person referring you is not under the same org? So a SWE referring me for a APM position for example

The only thing that matters is if the referrer has worked with you professionally. Otherwise, the referral is barely better than someone off the street

Ahh interesting, would you know if the different options hold a different weight? Like someone you know as a friend might be less important than someone you’ve worked with

    • Yes of course.

If you’ve actually worked directly on a team with someone you know their capabilities and work style better than just what your buddy tells you at dinner occasionally.

I would focus on prepping for the interview and not the referral. Apm programs at Facebook and google are probably more selective than the normal pm role if you go by the numbers. I’ve passed both companies interviews.

Only matters if they worked with you
