Maxing out 401K is a no brainer

It took me a long time to actually realize that buying index funds like VOO and VTI rather than individual stocks wins long term. Not just knowing about it. Once I realized that, maxing out 401k became a no brainer. Of course, with having your 401k invested in something that follows VOO or VTI. How many of you think this way? TC 300k

having capital locked up is the only thing for me. capital is used to gain capital. might even be worth the 30% tax for me to not do it

Having capital locked up is actually good for many people who are bad at investing though. It helps with “time in the market” in my opinion. And you can always withdraw them with some penalties, so it is not really being locked up. Just my thoughts

By your logic, use capital (401k) to gain capital (401k). Get tax benefits and capital gains both.

I didn't like 401k for the longest but now I just max it out and enjoy life with the remaining money, rather than worry about investing enough in my individual

Yeah same

A forced way to DCA into low cost broad market index funds that’s tax advantaged? You’d be stupid not to

Apple goelectric OP Mar 15

Yeah exactly

Likw which ones?

Stripe LiquidClem Mar 15

How long does it take for you to realize? I realized it but still buying individual stocks.

Apple goelectric OP Mar 15

There will be a point you see market outperforms your own stock portfolio. You deny it. And you see it again. You deny it again. And at some point, you finally accept it. This took me 5 years..

Apple goelectric OP Mar 15

Max out 401k. With the remaining money, go ahead and buy individual stocks that you like

Why are individual stocks bad?

Apple goelectric OP Mar 15

I never said they are bad!

"buying index funds like VTI rather than individual stocks for long term growth"

I opted for tech stock funds instead. Great growth the last 2 years. When it cool then i’ll change for something else. Depends on what the company’s plan have to offer though. FLCNX: 28% growth last 6 months(current job) FBCGX : 58% growth last 2 years.(last job) Job before I took rollover and put it in fidelity then bought all META. Orgasmic growth :). I almost nut each time I look at it. I think individual stock is better, but higher risk. As of all things. The plan is: max out hsa if you could, roth ira, then 401k

Apple goelectric OP Mar 15

Cool, you know what you are doing. Control your own 401k portfolio. Dont let the default setting do it

Wish I had figured all this out sooner though.

Investing in funds/indexes has nothing to do with locking your money for decades until you’re too old to enjoy it. Max it up to your company match, but not more than that.

AMD Haiti3 Mar 15

This person gets it. Let’s lock away our life for years out of our prime time.

Capital One caponeFanB Mar 15

I put away for retirement and also live life now. 401k actually makes me more likely to live now since I'm working now and not worried about not having money
