Hey blind, I'm happy to report that I got an offer for L5 MLE at Amazon Canada. My offer is for 250k CAD TC, with 160k base and the rest is a mix of sign on bonus and RSUs such that every year equals 250 given the vesting schedule and 15% expected stock growth. I have 2 YOE. My question is if there's room to negotiate still? From what I gather, the top of the band for SDE II in Canada is either 250 or 254. The recruiter had said they were maxing me out. When I look at levels.fyi, there are about ten salaries above that in Canada for my YOE as SDE II, ranging from 255 to 287. https://www.levels.fyi/t/software-engineer/locations/canada?searchText=Amazon&sortBy=total_compensation&sortOrder=DESC&yoeChoice=custom&maxYoe=2 How much should I ask and what arguments do I bring to the table? I do not have a competing offer, but still a pretty valuable path at my current job. Also, I saw someone say that anything below 15% above band goes to director for approval, but if above 15%, it goes to VP for approval. Is that true and does that change anything in terms of likelihood of acceptance of my counter offer? Thanks blind. TC: 125k + some startup options YOE: 2 #amazon #amazoncompensation #comp #tc #compensation #offer #amazonoffer
Is this offer in CAD or USD?
CAD
Looks good, congrats ! What's your cost of living there ? Rent and stuff
"15% expected stock growth" Where are you pulling this from lol
Recruiter said there's an assumed growth that would make it so the TC is equal every year. So I just crunched the numbers and found 15%. They said there's a process to give more shares if the stock falls short and lowers your TC.
Recruiter always BS on the RSU growth
I wouldn't bother... Idk.
They say to always negotiate. Why would I leave 30k more on the table. No sane company will give you the offer you want straight up, especially if frugality is one of their core values.
I think they can go upto 350 for sde2 in CAD, but may be for ppl with more exp. A recruiter mentioned that when I was thinking of interviewing at amzn 6months ago that 350 is possible. My YOE is 10.
Thanks for the info
That sounds like sde3(L6) range not L5
Congratulations OP. I wouldn't sweat for another 5%. Instead I would focus on nailing the L6 in 12 months
Thank you! Are there L6 MLE with 3-3.5 YOE?
Haven't came across any yet. The L6 AS, MLE I worked with come with CS PhD, some years as post doc , maybe 1or2 in PhD externship.
My first offer was for 253k, told me it was top of band as well, but I got them to raise it by ~20k with a justification (competing offers for Sr role, stocks vesting soon) It has to get approved up the chain though, and I have couple more yoe over you. I was happy with the original offer but never hurts to ask for a bit more. In your case you might want to say you'll accept for 10-20k more, worst case is that they'll say no

So you’re getting TC of 250K but top TC from what you’ve gathered is 254K? So essentially 1.5% / 4K more. Not sure if it is really worth the effort to build a case. Overall it looks very good for 2 YOE.
Yes, I know it's a great offer. But I'm thinking that if I was worth 245, they would have given me 245. But if they give me top of band, then they think I'm worth more and don't want to go through the process of generating a higher offer unless I ask.
Perhaps another option is to see if you can get in at a higher level and request an even higher salary. There is more value in building a case for that than trying to squeeze a little bit more from your current level.
