Which of those companies hold higher level of pedigree, prestige in terms of CV branding? Mckinsey (general consulting track) or data analyst, science at Google? Like to make people “WOW”
It’s kind of pathetic that you care so much about what other people think. How about doing the job that makes you happiest or allows you to have a better quality of life for you/your family?
Is this judgement necessary? We all value different things. And what if it is a path to getting OP to that ‘happy’ job. The way people jump to judge esp on this app never ceases to amaze me.
OP’s literal post was “Like to make people WOW” If you don’t believe that means someone has their values in the wrong place, then you’re part of the problem. ✌️
Don't chase prestige man. It's a dark road. Go with the job that you enjoy more and the job where you will relate with your co-workers better :)
Totally different career tracks, but overall Google. Google is the world's strongest brand, everyone's heard of it and used their free well built products. If it's in the press, it's releasing new gadgets or doing something altruistic. Rating: all the WOW. McKinsey's brand is strong too, but less heard of, brands you as a "slide maker," and gets a lot of bad press calling it nothing short of evil. It's the elite of consulting, but that entire industry doesn't have as much exposure to the larger public. Rating: some WOW, some BOO, some what's that?
For how long do you think Google's altruistic image is going to last considering the antitrust proceedings taking place?
It's gotten next to no public attention to this point. I'd wager that that remains unless some very relatable anti-consumer stuff is made obvious. Not anti-startup shenanigans, the collosal amount of open source work the company does counters that well, but something that directly hurts the average non-coding person. In any case, idk what Google would have to do that would outweigh headlines of strategy consulting for authoritarian regimes and large scale accounting fraud...
Having worked at both, let me tell you that 90% of the folks you will meet on a daily basis will have no clue what McKinsey is. But anyone and everyone's eyes open wide when you say you work at Google (even my colleagues at McKinsey used to be like wow you worked at Google, why are you here?). So if you want "WOW", go to Google
Where did you like to work more?
I know a lot of ex McKinsey people and have to say I am not impressed (though it's better than the rest of the consulting lot). Google isn't uniformly awesome but Google has many of the smartest people I know working there too.
Thanks! Got 2 questions. 1) Would you put brand of Mckinsey over GS? 2) in your opinion, what is the most elite company? Or the company you dream to work at
To me it seems like McKinsey and GS are somewhat equal in brand. To be honest, as far as brand goes, realistically speaking no one thinks any of these big famous companies are BAD brands to have, even though there are more elite companies that are a huge plus to have. As long as you have the money you are happy with it's fine. I'm quitting GS in the pursuit of more money lol.
Probably Google (especially in tech), but only if you use your offer to swap from data science to PM (assuming you’re interested in non-technical roles in the long-run) Data science by itself is not a prestigious role at google (unless it’s a Brain AI research role), and nor are the bulk of the biz-ops roles :)
Why is it not prestigious? At other companies it seems equal to SWE in terms of prestige
Google is more prestigious in general, but data science is not a prestigious role.

Mckinsey is a joke. At least Googlers are smart. Mckinsey consultants don't do shit and just churn out idiotic reports telling you what you already know and then charging you 400/hr
What kind of idiot pays millions for idiotic reports ?
People don’t want to make a decisive decision and who values a fall (McKinsey ) person,
Obviously google for tech, google's very tough hiring bar, tons of competition, and valuable products make it stand way above mc kinsey where most of my average or below average classmates went to.
