My manager is completely useless…advice?

So im pretty early on in my career right now and I just recently broke into the data science field and a lot of the things that im doing is still really new to me. However, my manager (TPM) is completely useless to making me successful at work. He has never coded before, he doesn’t know any systems, and he barely understands what a sql table is. He tosses out words like machine learning, natural language processing every now and then and im like dude, you want me to make a dashboard, ETL, ML algo, etc. and I feel that with him being the TPM he should handle the stakeholder side of things. However, I am the one communicating with the stakeholders and customers of the project and getting the resources to make stuff happen. Maybe this is expected of me, idk, but like my manager doesn’t even care when I try to explain to him my limitations and when I need him to push back on the stakeholders. People say that hes a people pleaser so he just starts piling more and more work on me. Also, I am genuinely the only one on site that does this and the rest of the people who do this have actual teams in our HQ’s so its really frustrating. Is this normal ? if so, I feel better. If not ,suggestions ? Ive interviewed with companies and i feel that theres skepticism when i tell them that that im coding everything front and back while also pretty much acting as the tpm in terms of technical dependencies, stakeholder management, maintenewncr etc and its literally the truth. I almost snapped the other day 🥲🥲🥲 Edit: ive been lc like crazy Tc tax :84k

For P&G I am not at all surprised it’s like this. Your Manager should be helping push back against unreasonable stakeholders but you should be expected to interact with and communicate with stakeholders as well (actually this is important if your TPM doesn’t understand what the requests on you are). This is a business skill that is incredibly valuable so I’d actually lean into it but be direct with your manager about when you need backup. Have been in similar position in another specialty and it’s hard but learned a lot that put me in a great place for later roles.

Well, your manager is not useless. He is being used for anonymous criticism right here.
