Mech to CS/DS career shift

Posting for a friend. He is currently working as a mechanical engineering at GE but some of his work has been with coding lately. He loves his job but he is now regretting why he chose mechnical instead of cs when he had the option. The pay is very bad compared to coding/data field. Should he go for an ms (mech or cs/ds?) or should he continue in mech field only. Looking for people who have changed careers to coding after working in mech or similar fields. Going for an ms seems to be an option since he has no coding experience and having an ms might help change career. Was your decide good or what do you think you would choose now? Was originally a Mechanical engineer. Did a masters in data science and switched over recently. Masters is likely the easiest way to go... He doesn't have to finish his entire masters before applying for jobs, but he should finish the degree because I think it'd catch up to him later in his career if/when he climbs the ladder... It'd be a good thing to have the degree in his back pocket

Money should be a motivation but not the only motivation.. one does do not do job for charity..

Yes. I do think so. I suggested to get a idea on what actually happens in coding as well as speak to his colleagues to see what career progression is ahead of him at GE and decide.

Has he reached out directly to the data science team? They work closely with engineering and would value that meche background. Take a machine learning mooc and learn sklearn. Learn SQL. I'm not sure how stats heavy the team is now, but that open stats book is great and a quick read. MS will help and would give more options, but he could do DS almost immediately.
