I am starting to think Chinese interviewers currently fail non-Chinese candidates on purpose.
I was making 42k a year as a ME out of school. I transitioned to software engineering 6 years ago. My tax slip this year was for just over 10x what I made as a ME. This in Canada btw.
Same started at stupid 58k a year 🥲
Where do you work now for 400k + TC in Canada ?
Just switched to SWE and took a pay cut to do it I think it’ll be worth it in the long run… not just in terms of pay but also quality of life ME jobs aren’t wfh friendly and I hated having to show up to an assembly line with toxic chemicals every day at 6AM ME TC: 120k (YOE: 3) SWE TC: 98k (YOE: <1)
What was your location?
Los Angeles
I switched from ME to SWE. ME is basically a meme nowadays
How so? I think it’s making a comeback these days with all the li ion manufacturing coming to USA. I am getting like 5 interview reqs a week
How many of them are paying $300k-$900k?
$315K seems very high for an ME. My daughter is at about $120K, 4 years into her career (BS in ME, MS in AE). She knows 20+ year veterans that are not even breaking $200K, but the WLB, benefits and job security are excellent.
Well it used to be high, not anymore. If you have EV experience in battery or motor design, road is wide open. I don’t know where those veterans are working but most likely they became expert on 1-2 things in their early day and sticked to it (which is very common in ME as physics laws won’t ever change) The youngest guy on my team makes $150k in base alone.
The 20 yesr guys are at defense contractors. My daughter moved to an electric helicopter company that is Amazon backed. Her salary actually went down but she received options and even more importantly free flight training and she is so excited about the work.
Yeah, I am searching right now while also following another mech engineer’s path who already switched to SWE few years ago.
Why SWE ? Why not break into to hedge funds? If you are already willing to put the effort
No idea about hedge funds. Can you please tell me more about it? What do i need to get into hedge funds? I think i need some trafing knowledge and econometrics type of knowledge?
Hey OP, where do you work, if you don't mind sharing?
One of the eVTOL startup in bay area.
Not an ME, but an EE. I've been working in the power utility industry since I got out of school. This is making me really think about switching to SE.
Yoe and TC?
