I hate articles that use the word "overrun" instead of actual numbers. Really diminishes what they are trying to say when they don't specify what it is. It's purposely vague so that one side can assume like 90% men and the other side can assume 10% men and both feel vindicated in their own way. Literally used the words "droves" and "tons" Hard to take lazy "journalism" seriously.
It’s GHC organizer duty to figure out who can attend and who can’t attend.
Without breaking laws against discrimination toward any group.
Then why are blinders freaking out and discriminating?
Yes, they assumed all CIS gender looking man were straight males. This considers all non binary males of lgbtq+ identifying males as CIS gendered males. Absurd.
The article literally mentions that they were self-identifying men, stop trying to act smart lol
It was unacceptable, but unlike the poll wording, the event doesn’t exclude allies.
So what’s acceptable? Men to just sit and let women take jobs without any competition, and then just simp around saying go girl, you deserve it?
Two sides to this, in my opinion: 1) it's illegal to ban men from events, so it's ok that some went, and it was even smart of them, knowing that it would be a smaller total crowd and could give them opportunities to talk to tech recruiters 2) however, the men should have been on BEST behavior and not cut in front of women in line, and not talked over women, since clearly this event is intended for women to have an opportunity to showcase themselves to recruiters. Women fill only 25% of tech roles in the US, so come on men, do you really believe you're owed 80%+ of tech jobs? That's ridiculous. The behavior of the men in the tiktok videos at the conference is aggressive and pretty disappointing to me
Aggressive?
Any evidence that shows men behaved that way ?
So what.
Just have a job fair for each individual gender if you’re going to do one. I don’t think it’s fair to sideline any gender out from such opportunities especially when they’re primarily based on merit. Those not on their best behavior are just escorted out like any other public place.
Businesses state they want diversity (whether that’s warranted or not is out of scope for this discussion). A purely merit based system comes in the way of that and this is why these outreach events exist. They already get enough applications from men, so having a job fair for men doesn’t add enough value.
I thought the labor law clearly mentions that there shouldn’t be any discrimination based on sex, race, religion, etc. That also probably explains why they couldn’t force men from not attending this conference. It’d be a clear violation of the law. Businesses can try to empower minorities through such conferences but I do not think they can circumvent hiring practices in the name of DEI.
I am a man and I was surprised to see photos of ghc 2023. It looked like a H1B career fair.
Not ok.
Toxic femininity
Explain?
