Hey all! Joined Meta in August as a return intern and am looking to leave. I have <1 year of experience, but I'm wondering if I could be considered E4 at other tech companies if I start interviewing now. I'm also pondering the HFT route which I know would result in higher TC as well, and I'm interested in that work too. I'm a high performer at Meta (manager says at or above E4 level but is pushing back on promo due to total time at company) and to be completely honest I want to jump ship especially with the shift in direction here. I have recruiters for LinkedIn, Google, Amazon, TikTok, Dropbox, HRT/Citadel/trading, etc... all in my inbox but haven't pursued anything yet. Is it realistic to expect a TC bump and maybe a level increase somewhere or should I wait until I get promoted to E4 at Meta first? Waiting for a promotion seems pointless as I'll look to leave immediately anyway but I'm not sure how this all works. TC: 240k (with sign-on first year), recurring 150k (stock fell!) #engineering #software #swe #meta #google #tc
Why do you want to leave?
1) Comp is lower due to stock crash and I don't see my grant recovering anytime soon. I get that ~20k yearly lower is nothing in the grand scheme of things, but my mind tells me why not jump and get that and more somewhere else. 2) Feel like my heart isn't with my team's vision and after I learn more it seems like the product will be a flop tbh. 3) Manager is pushing back on promo even though he says I'm performing at E4 level for a while now which is pretty annoying and means I can only promo at end of H2 2022. Losing motivation due to this as well.
Which location are you working at? I can pm if you don’t want to share here. I’m considering to join fb
It's very unlikely that you would get E4 somewhere else unless you kill the interview. Even if you get to E4, with 1 YOE you probably won't get the same level at another company. If you do get promoted fast you should ask for AE. Stock price is low now so new equity will help your TC.
I replied to another comment with the reasons for why I want to leave, and one of them is the slower promo than I initially wanted. Manager and peers say I've been performing at E4 for a while, but manager will only put me up for promo in H2 2022 due to 'time at company' which is making me less motivated to produce more. Is it really that tough to get E4 with around 1 YOE? Even a significant pay bump at E3 might be worth, but unsure about that
Why would someone promote you to a new level with so little experience? What have you done or learned in a single year? Not much, is the answer.
Fwiw, you should try interviewing at the HFT shops to see if it pans out. They definitely aren’t a slouch when it comes to difficulty
Since it’s your first job, try and stick it out at least a year so it looks good on resume. You should be promoted to E4 by then anyways and it’ll make it much easier to bounce.
Yeah, you’ve spent time ramping up so it would be good for you to get to the next level at Meta.
My question is what is the point of getting to E4 internally before leaving? It would be good for validation but not like it would matter for external recruiting right?
