What do you think is wrong with a kid who got rejected by 9 colleges?
I accepted Meta offer as an E5, then I get competing offer from Microsoft as 65. The interview process for both was in parallel, but Microsoft process was very slow. Please comment with reasons. Current TC: 170£ MSFT TC: 264£ Meta TC: 242£ YOE: 13
You can get promoted very quickly at Meta if you are underleveled. MSFT is giving 🥜 refreshers. In long run, meta beat msft easily for compensation
The moment you accept msft you will start losing money. Meta gives you fat refreshers, msft gives you nothing. And then there is a cliff after 4 years. Meta also gives you more room to grow and increase your comp. It’s much easier to go e5->e6 than l65->l67
What about l65 to l66?
Really depends on the team and org, but in terms of pay, 65-66 won’t make a big difference. MSFT also tends to uplevel external hires as the only means of matching comp. If this is the case - you are likely to get stuck on that level for quite a bit and get shitty perf reviews as you will be compared to people who have been on the team and waiting for that 66 promo for years. It really depends on your org and luck, but I would not expect fast promos, especially if you were up leveled for the sake of being able to match the comp.
Is L65 at Microsoft an uplevel considered to E5 at Meta? I see that Microsofties saying promo is faster at Meta. E5 to E6 is not trivial. Promos are fast only until E5. There are so many E5s competing for E6 and a team can have only one. If L65 scope is higher at Microsoft, take it, do something good there and then interview again at Meta for E6. Getting in as E6 is easier than internal promo from E5 to E6. Also at E5, you can't transition to manager, if that's something you want to consider.
Find a team with superstar e6. The e6 will soon move up the chain and give you his seat. L65 is principle level. So it's considered 1 level up compared to e5.
About 40% of engineers in Meta are E5s now. There are just too many. E5 is the new E4. And a lot of those E5s are ambitious and want to get to E6 soon. So you have to deal with a lot of unnecessary political shit to move to E6 (much more than what it used to be)!
Microsoft give you pennies after your hiring bonuses!
Would you be able to provide a rough base number for your meta offer please?
Meta stock so low now I'd jump ship in a heartbeat as I think/hope it'll only go up from there. Also you actually get promoted at a reasonable time frame at Meta unlike MSFT
