Wife was laid off just now. For those who have been laid off, what do you wish you heard when you found out? She seems to be experiencing what looks like shock, embarrassment, disappointment and a sense of just profound loss. Unfortunately Meta has been a such a big part of our lives for almost a decade, and I’m struggling to say anything that will lift her up. -We relied on progeny to plan out our future as a little family, that’s now on hold. -She was about to take her recharge, now that’s gone. -She had so many internal partners and friends that she’ll likely never see again. -All the things she uses daily are now completely different, her phone stopped working, her laptop cut her off from chat threads with her team sending supporting. Her email is going away asap. It just feels like a funeral because she lost so many things at once. I wish I could trade places with her. I wish there was something I could do or say but word fail me. Any advice on words to share with her? Her love language is words and I seem to be lacking them right now.#layoff #layoff #severance #severance #layoff
Now you both need to know. Job is a job. It’s not everything in life.
This. Why have friends at work? They arent friends
So just become completely detached at work? That’s dumb. When you work for a corporation and especially a FANG company, you’re ultimately just a cog in the machine and will always be expendable, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have a lot of great relationships and experiences at that company. You spend more time at your job than just about anything else. So to say a “job is just a job” is really stupid. It’s a big loss for most people on many levels.
You are good and empathetic spouse.
Agreed!
I really do appreciate the kindness. I’d honestly trade spots with her in a heartbeat, she’s the best person I know and I know she in no way deserved it.
You are just a number to your company. No loyalty to you, show no loyalty to them 😔
Yeah you’re not wrong
Job is a job and is not one’s identity
But what will my family brag about me now?
and who pays my M$ mortgage
It is a good lesson in impermanence and attachment.
It’s true , it did feel like sand slipping through our fingers as Meta began to implode. I do believe she comes out of this a more whole person, I just wish that day to come was today. Thank you for your perspective and kindness
I suppose the best way to empathize is to understand that she’s going through a breakup, the loss of a relationship, in this case her employer. Whom was already well prepared to part ways with her than she was with them.
That’s a great way to look at it, thank you for saying that
Perfect time to start your family
Grandmom spotted.
In some ways that is very true. @chaatgpt1, that’s hilarious, it is totally what her family is going to say when she calls them lol
"I know this has been a big part of your life. But you know what? We made the money. Fuck meta. Let's go to a beach"
Honestly, i have always said fuck meta, get money, be happy. I’ll now add the beach part for good measure hahah, thank you for the perspective, we might in fact go to the beach today thanks to you
Make sure you guys get some expensive cocktails at the beach. Cheers! You won!
Yeah this a small tiny tiniest issue. Also think about the huge severance package that’s on the way
Honestly, that severance package is a huge offset to this awful event. Getting fired would wayyyyyyyyyy worse. Thankful she has the time and room to find her path after this. Thank you for the kindness stranger
It's just a matter of time. Things will be fine soon. I would say this is the time to relax and travel to rejuvenate instead of thinking back-back about the rabbit hole again. She will, anyways get into the rabbit hole(good job soon) and rat race soon, and im sure. So think differently and relax.
That a great perspective to put on this. This too will pass. Thank you for being so kind and offering advice
