Meta Relocation policy

Hi Meta folks, I am currently interviewing with Meta for a role that will need me to be in the office 2 days a week. I’m currently interviewing for the Austin office but had some plans in motion to move to Canada and I’m wondering if: a) I should mention it now in my interviewing and if that will negatively impact my chances. b) I reach offer stage and accept for Austin, is there a certain amount of time I would have to wait before asking for relocation? c) whether relocation to another country is generally easy with Meta (I’m a US citizen and Canadian PR so don’t have any sponsorship or work status issues) Appreciate any insight folks can provide. Thanks! #relocation

Interviewing?? Meta is in a hiring freeze, isn’t it? 🤔

Oracle tofu1709 OP May 14, 2022

No clue. Maybe certain orgs might be? I’m interviewing for a non-tech role if that helps

Meta sev0.1 May 14, 2022

Non tech isn’t on a freeze yet. You’re good

Meta ankarah May 14, 2022

Which level and what role?

Meta ankarah May 14, 2022

So two things, depending on level and org/role the answer may be irrelevant if the position is part of the freeze. Otherwise, does the job location listings include remote, or just office locations?

Oracle tofu1709 OP May 14, 2022

It’s a non-tech CSM role (which I believe isn’t part of the freeze as others pointed out). They listed a bunch of locations but all of them were in the US and didn’t include remote. During the interviews, they mentioned that it’s a hybrid role but that “there is flexibility in how many days I choose to come in”

I interviewed whilst living in Europe and had to come to the US for the role as that was where it was. Not in a different country. Just sprinkling that in. Good luck.

It will be subject to manager approval, but unless you're really needed in the Austin office they should approve you. Especially if you're not preassigned to a team. Relocating from US to Canada is very simple from an HR perspective, if you're approved to move within the US you should be approved in Canada. Best to start with an Austin offer, since I believe your initial stock grant won't be adjusted when you move. Your base salary and refreshers will be adjusted (for SWE, it's about a 25% drop from Austin to Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver and 30% elsewhere in Canada).

Thank you so much, this is really helpful! And if I was to accept in Austin, is there a period of time I would have to wait before requesting relocation? Would it be considered bad faith if I don’t disclose it while I’m still interviewing?

I think it’s worth being open and honest upfront and see what they are willing to do. Once you are an internal hire you can always apply for remote work out of Canada, although i don’t think they would sponsor your move. Pretty sure there shouldn’t be any issues, unless the role is intrinsically tied to Austin which I find very rare for Meta tbh

If it’s a US based headcount, Canada may not be an option. But there is a ton of internal mobility. Depending on your time frame on moving to CAN you’re fine

Oracle tofu1709 OP May 14, 2022

In terms of time frame, is there like a certain amount of time you have to wait if you get hired?

Meta LevelUp. May 16, 2022

Typically it’s a year before you can apply to an internal role

Usually canada pay range very low relative to US. You will get peanuts there! First get on board in US and plan down the line if you are not in rush.

I don’t think you are thinking this through very well Canada is a shit hole and you will pay a crazy amount of taxes in Canada plus get paid less before any taxes!

Oracle tofu1709 OP Jun 13, 2022

I’ve lived in both countries so had a chance to weigh the pros and cons and I’m pretty aware of the discrepancies.

Then you must have a mental disorder to choose Canada over the USA
