So 9 months after signing the offer letter and only 3 weeks left until my move to London, I received an email from Meta to let me know they were taking back my offer. This has been one of the hardest news of my life so far. I'm from South America, a place where Big Tech presence is very reduced, and usually limited to sales or customer support. Receiving this offer meant for me the promise of a fulfilled dream, but losing it is a blow I wasn't prepared for. Now I'm trying to put my sorrow aside by figuring out my next steps. The job market seems too tough right now, specially for new grads. If in better times it was already difficult to find a company willing to sponsor and relocate me, now this is surely next to impossible. Bottom line, in the short term, I won't be able to get an offer similar to Meta's. That said, at the moment I have only two plans in mind: Go for masters in US: I think I would be able to get into an okayish program, not MIT/Stanford caliber for sure, but probably something Top 30 at least. Pros: - I might be able to fund 80% of it with my savings, so probably no need for crazy loans - I could probably get GC before OPT ends since I'm RoW - I would gain access to many opportunities that I couldn't even dream of in my own country Cons: - Going back to school - 1.5+ years without working as an SWE Stay put and try again in a few years: At least I didn't give notice in my current job. Pros: - Chill and live a comfortable life in my country, specially for the low CoL - Get to keep my savings Cons: - Less oportunities in the long run - If I get to apply to FAANG again, my experience here might not appear as valuable to a recruiter from abroad - Latin America is a politically and economically unstable region What does blind think? USA GC, option 2 is a life of poverty (relatively). The long term pay difference would be astronomical, 10x or More
Those days of Big Tech are over, for now
Lol tech is just getting started.
Apply to other jobs and see what comes of it. Education can only fill so much, and if you need the money might not be the best option.
Maybe try to get a remote job at a U.S. startup. You’d get paid better than in local market (although less than FAANG), and have experience at a U.S. company on your resume.
USA is a no brainer. No way to make $$ anywhere else
Try again. You did it before, you can always do it again. The job market is not encouraging for now but things may change for the better soon. Just continue to sharpen your skills.
Go to US if, 1. You need to build and grow your career in long term. 2. You don’t care about FAANG but want to work with some of the best people in industry( it’s everywhere not just FAANG). 3. planning for family way down the line. Don’t go to US if, 1. You just want to prove that you are worthy by getting into FAANG. Trust me only handful of people at top are smart (so is in any other company) 2. You want to be rich. Seattle and Bay Area is full of shallow ego people who buy Tesla but can’t afford housing despite being senior or staff in FAANG. 3. You can’t do your own dishes and laundry.
Go do a PhD program in engineering so you get free tuition plus a stipend at most universities. Then quit with a master's. May need to do coding focused thesis in a non-CS major like EE or math.
Hard to get into PhD.
Sorry that happened to you. If the masters in the US is possible, definitely go for that, if you get GC soon, it’s an even better option. Whereabouts in SA are you in? If in Brazil, there are quite a few FAANG options, Google in Minas, Amazon/Microsoft/Uber in SP (Netflix too, but only for Seniors). It’s not too bad to start a career and will make the move abroad easier as well. I’m also from SA (Brazil), started my career there and moved after 1y, so it’s definitely doable.
I’d save that $$ and go to Europe. Some good MSc at top school: Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, UK, Sweden. Fewer opportunities than US, but you’ll save so much money by not paying tuition (a lot of colleges are free in Europe) and much lower living costs. Get a student job on the side (part time coding freelance or a few internships) and you’re good. Sorry this happened to you (this could’ve been me a year ago). Wish you the best of luck.
You pay for it by having mediocre job opportunities. Life is nice though. (European here, lived in the US for a while, now in London). I'd definitely suggest going for the MS at a good school in the US. The type of college environment you'll be in; you just can't find it in Europe, sorry. Also make the best of OPT and remain there. No time zone difference for family calls and shorter flights is also good.
Sorry to hear that. Did you get any severance for the rescinded offer? IMO, I’d go to Masters. 1.5 year is not that long and you’ll be in the US.
Hey Databricks can I ask for a referral?
