Meta folks, Is there an option to get a laptop with Linux as a new employee (eng)? Or is Mac the best option for internal apps and tools?
It is possible but it’s not that well supported.
you really wanna be that snowflake?
No no! I just use windows and dual boot
😭
Thanks for the feedback. Mac it is then. Linux fanboi sheds a tear.
Are you frontend or backend?
A lot of the AOSP devs have a Linux desktop. Need special approval as they cost 10 grand. You can also permanently reserve a dev server which is Linux based. Then use vim or eMacs to develop.
More of the internal tools and vs code integration is done with mac in mind
Pick MAC and chill
Just curious, why would you need a Linux laptop?
You can get additional device with Linux. Initial tech for new eng hire is going to be a Mac.
Don’t listen to these dorks. I lived with a MacBook for 2.5 years before getting the Fedora machine I really wanted as an additional device. Setup was annoying for like 1 hr, but I haven’t had any issues after 3 months with it.
I don't know what these people are talking about. Here's the real answer: - you get the MacBook when you start (MacBook is well supported and it makes doing the "employee setup" stuff easier) - as soon as you start, make a request through buy@ for a Linux laptop - after you get the Linux laptop and set it up, throw your MacBook in your desk cabinet and forget about it - profit
