EMs can do the TPM role, they should do the same across the industry
An ideal TPM should help balance the self interest of an EM. Too many EMs drive projects on their team that look really great on paper, but do not push the needle. A TPM should have the same technical depth or better than an EM, but is motivated more by improving the product for end users. Not to say EMs can’t do that, but in an ideal world they’re two sides of the same coin. Shame that TPMs have such a bad rap here. I’m SWE fwiw
Most of the tpm lack the tech part, so that's the problem. A good tpm is hard to find

Then they have to pay them EMs and TL rates. Execs would rather pay 50% of those rates for a TPM.
Meta is the real PIP machine. Fired about 25% of staff already and then we got the PIP quotas from stack ranking on top of that. The culture is extremely toxic as well, with no work life balance whatsoever. Amazes me that some people want to go there for a measily few grand more a year. I had a Meta employee shilling me a job at a meetup the entire time despite telling him repeatedly I'm not interested.

My team has been fine for 5+ years, no one on my team had been pipped and I got my best PSC last year, GE with massive stock bump and bonus. Stop dooming.

Tpm roll is a waste of money anyways. Wish Amazon would follow suit. 500k+ to be a glorified calendar scheduler and doc writer, with no major decisions made by them. Those come from the sdm
