Meta or Amazon SWE

Have a boomerang offer from Amazon L5 for 375k HCOL (375, 375, 360, 360). Current Tc at Meta E4 is 275k but get refreshers over the years and like the lifestyle/perks/team. Definitely prefer in-office, but Amazon team would be mostly remote work and work seems ok. Feel like I’m just chasing $$ with Amazon but 100k is hard to pass up. Tc 275k HCOL 5 YOE

Why the low total Tc for Amazon low prestige? $400k+

Meta dwNk46 OP Aug 9, 2022

Tried but can’t without competing offers. Don’t care about prestige, just $$/benefits, work, and wlb.

Zillow Group Zfww971 Aug 9, 2022

Meta low prestige bad wlb

Having survived Amazon is a big asset and you should definitely leverage that.

Microsoft Adheira Aug 9, 2022

No refreshers at Amazon for next 4 years? Like even if you get promoted?

Meta dwNk46 OP Aug 9, 2022

Could get refreshers with promo/perf I believe, but not counting on it

ByteDance wYuY20 Aug 9, 2022

Yea I agree with OP. It's out of band for L5, but within band for L6. My 2 cents is to take it. I think even if this team sucks, you can always transfer and find some other team within Amazon that's a better fit. I'm pretty sure they won't dock your pay and you'll have a lot more information when internally transferring.

Amazon . .. Aug 9, 2022

All the perks that you get cost around 10K Leaving 100K for 10K is foolish

Meta smuck Aug 10, 2022

Umm refreshers/bonus alone are worth much more than 10k. Add in another 10k for 401k match. Food, wellness, etc. are probably 15k. Add it all together and consider taxes, and the difference isn’t as big as you think it is

Meta hwYwh Aug 9, 2022

even for 100k i wouldnt go to amazon

Amazon SgendG Aug 9, 2022

100k+. Meta vs Amazon. Pretty much the same on your resume, stop that prestigious shit.

Meta dwNk46 OP Aug 9, 2022

did you even read the post lol

ByteDance wYuY20 Aug 9, 2022

Would you mind sharing if this is AWS or not? And did you get the offer this week? And did you have to do any negotiating to get this offer (any tips would be very appreciated too)? For context, I've been hearing that the compensation structure, especially around boomerang offers, changed quite a bit within the past month where they're really trying to cut-back on these out-of-band offers.

Meta dwNk46 OP Aug 9, 2022

Yes, AWS. Recruiter said the same, won’t be able to push for more without a better competing offer.

ByteDance wYuY20 Aug 9, 2022

If you don't mind: 1. Can you share if you did any negotiating / how did you go about it? 2. How long were you an L5 at Amazon previously? 3. What was the previous TC as an L5? 4. How long ago did you leave (roughly)? Mostly I'm in a very similar situation (haven't gotten an initial offer yet). If I was in your shoes I would take the Amazon offer.

I’d consider staying at Meta until you can boomerang to L6 Amazon.

Amazon wawY45 Aug 10, 2022

Why buy boomerang to Amazon now, then go back to Meta at L6?

Amazon dr hamster Aug 10, 2022

I suppose it is influenced by promo/impact opportunity at the current level. But staying for now on a good team would be my preference because that can be even harder to find

Amazon Golden4 Aug 9, 2022

Debating a 50% pay increase?

Amazon wawY45 Aug 10, 2022

375k HCOL? You do mean NYC/SF, right? That's honestly a pretty good offer for a boomerang, given the recent change in policy. We're you YOY TT when you left? The Feb 2022 band for SF/NYC SDE-II is: 165k - 223k base, 276k - 358k tc. So, you're already getting above band with a 375k TC. Per July 2022 boomerang policy, they're supposed to reinstate your old TCT as a new offer on a boomerang, e.g., 80% band penetration for regular TT. Unless you were YOY TT, this either means (for us other Amazonians) the policy is more flexible than was allured in the lounge a few weeks ago, and/or it's a pretty nice offer. (Or you were actually YOY TT and they just round up a bit.)

Zillow Group Zfww971 Aug 10, 2022

But Amazon low prestige?

Amazon wawY45 Aug 10, 2022

Right. That's why we're paying 100k above Meta. 🤷‍♂️ 375k Amazon is more prestige than 275k Meta.
