Meta to Gov Job… after layoffs

Was laid off, poked around and found a gov job - have absolutely no idea about gov jobs, pros cons? Currently: Pro: 1. Easy going 2. Same Base maybe a small tiny bump (potentially) 3. Having a job and money 4. Stability 5. No fear of layoffs constantly or getting performance evaluated for impact 6. I can afford food Cons: 1. Not cool lose the prestige 2. Slow growth 3. Is bonus a thing? 4. No stocks 5. Boring 6. Remote work might not be an option 7. Mentally feel like I’m moving backwards and it’s affecting my ego kinda of depressing but is it worse than no job … no Current/Laidoff $: Base: $173k Bonus: 15% Stock: $20k TC: $229k ~ Potential Gov: Base: GS-14 Grade Step 10 = $176,842 (NY locality Pay) Bonus: not sure it exists Stock: … stock them shelves TC: Base :(

Gov job is a dream…seriously. So much stability and benefit…

Meta User367875 OP May 19, 2023

Can you elaborate please

Meta TC/GTFO! May 19, 2023

Maybe op you are young and energetic and have no family now. But when you are older, there will be way more distractions in life and you will need that wlb from gov jobs and also that stability. Ideally you want to accumulate some net worth before going into it tho

Meta oldfart23 May 19, 2023

Probably no bonus; but is there a pension?

Meta TC/GTFO! May 19, 2023

Yes there is

Goldman Sachs KguH04 May 19, 2023

pension is usually way undervalued if one isn’t familiar w/ finance a bit ;)

You go from E4 to GS14? GS 14 is like staff at the government. It doesn’t make you less employable. Honestly I would take it if I thought economy was in the crapper. Gov is a great place to hide for a few years

Where can I sign up

Google zOKe30 May 19, 2023

How are things at The Trade Desk? I thought you were crushing it out there and had a decent WLB. Is that wrong?

The Trade Desk blindDept May 19, 2023

In general I like it, they are pushy with rto but loosely enforced so no big deal. WLB is mostly ok , but there are periods that are very busy. I have been here 5 years though, trying to think of next step…not sure I want to stay in tech or adtech

My family member is a GS-14 in DC, they work fully remote since COVID and they said it’s the most chill job. They never have to worry about layoffs, if the government does shutdown they get to chill until it reopens and get back pay for the time it was closed. Their pension is amazing (been in Gov for 21 years) and they don’t plan on ever leaving. I would definitely consider moving to the government from 58-65 when I plan to retire to have the steady 200k plus income for minimal work.

Meta hJxv78 May 19, 2023

Agreed on most points, but I think they are doing RTO soon for most remote federal workers, so don’t assume that https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/3950271-biden-administration-urges-return-to-office-for-federal-workers/amp/

Twilio 🦂king- May 19, 2023

It’s dependent on which branch of the government you’re working for. There is no worry of RTO for my family member, as they were working remotely most days out of the week prior to COVID

There are bonuses in fed gov but prob not same as meta. Where is this? US digital service, 18F or in defense or something?

Meta User367875 OP May 19, 2023

DHS

Microsoft sdad202 May 19, 2023

I would take it, and if you’re not happy, just simply keep interviewing. You don’t need to include the layoff when you apply to companies. You also don’t even need to include every single job you’ve worked.

It’s incredibly boring and low stress work that doesn’t pay anywhere near top of band. Once you’re there for a year, you will never be fired, and you get insane benefits/a pension. It’s a great place to be if you want great WLB balance, aren’t worried about chasing TC, and want more time to explore things on your own. The downside is it’s a pretty rigid work environment re: working hours, time off, etc.. and can get boring quickly unless you’re doing some cool NSA type shit. Sidenote - how TF did you pull a step 10 if you’ve never worked in government before?

Meta User367875 OP May 19, 2023

Thank you for the comment, can you share some of the benefits you mentioned

Meta User367875 OP May 19, 2023

Because step 1 is no where near my comp - so I’m assuming they will match my comp … had an offer before from gov and they were matching my previous comp

Man I want a government job

Google xFgI76 May 19, 2023

My MIL has worked for the government her whole life and is close to retiring. I’ll mention some more pros and cons that haven’t been mentioned yet. Pros: - She’s able to WFH - Pension Cons: - Long hours (most of her days are 10hrs; she says thats because her team doesn’t pull their weight so she has to pick up the slack) - Related to point above, shitty culture. Her colleagues are lazy, backstabbers, racist and will do anything to get a promo - Want to highlight the racist part because I don’t think people truly understand what a liberal bubble tech is until they work for the government. People in government are much older and conservative in general. Sometimes bringing with them non inclusive behaviors. - Fwiw, she’s worked in DC most her career and has jumped around a few departments. It all boils down to your priorities. In this economy, honestly anything is better than nothing. You can always find a better job when it happens.
