For those who have worked at both Meta and Google, which culture do you prefer? From what I’ve read on Blind, this is my understanding: Meta: Slightly higher pay for eng Slightly lower pay for UX Faster paced Code quality is not great Self initiative rewarded More scope overlap between teams Very impact driven More cutthroat culture Better refreshers Easier to switch between teams Google: Slightly lower eng pay Slightly higher pay for UX Higher code quality Slow moving More chill culture Colleagues not as cutthroat More boring maintenance work More meetings for alignment Promotions are harder Refreshers not as good Both: Performance review driven Politics on many teams What am I missing?
Meta is still run by the founder who is deeply motivated. Google is a mature business run by non passionate people.
I wouldn't say the current leadership team is non-passionate. They come across as very level-headed and rational. This is how a mature company should be run.
if google comes out the recession avoiding layoff, yall better put a poster of sundar and ruth on your bedroom.
Meta is a dumpster fire, Google is not.
I did the most boring non interesting work at google. I was L5 and holy shit that place is a mess. Nobody cares if something is actually a product. People build for sake of building. It’s all config changes and meetings
Did you try switching teams? Seems like a bad team/org
Meta pays “much” more. There’s a premium on people perceiving it as a lesser brand. Code quality on average is shit but there’re exceptions. Self initiative is not “rewarded” and more like “expected” at e5+ Roughly the same cutthroat as Google Google is not that chill in some teams More meetings to align with other engineers but no need to align with so many XFN people, including people who write content
How “much” more does Meta pay? Is levels.fyi still accurate?
Levels.fyi is quite outdated. Google can pay you more than Meta if you have competing offers
G is not slightly less pay. Its huge pay gap. These days even atlassian can beat G package easily
Are Atlassian numbers accurate in levels.fyi?
Didnt check. Levels has very varied range
G has a lot more of a decision by committee kind of culture and is super inefficient and slow as a result. engineers have a higher say there too, as opposed to at meta where things are more balanced. meta pays UX a lot more than G. both can be equally cutthroat. leadership has more balls to talk straight at meta, while at G leadership diplomatically evades answering anything. meta is a lot more hated tho, so if you work here prepare for the occasional snarky comment by friends or family.
Curious how much better UX pay is? From elsewhere in the thread sounds like refreshers are 30-50% better.
Yeah I agree, the only real issue I have working for Meta is that I don't know if Zuck will ever be able to gain the trust of people. Many a times you will meet people who would ask you stuff like "why you guys play around with our user data" , "you guys listen to our private lives" and "shame on you". Still they will use Instagram and WhatsApp but don't really trust these apps or truly understand how these work. All I prefer is saying I go to work to do research and I don't make these apps or decisions, spare me 🙈
Or just tell them to stop using these apps. They don’t have to
Meta doesn't pay more if you joined in 2021.
Google culture is way better than Meta. You don't feel constant stress but solving similar problems, and there is a lot of trust at Google. There is a lot of fakeness in Meta. I would take a paycut to Go back to Google and enjoy the work and also life at the same time. Money is not worth it for my case and I am both L5 at Google and Meta. The pay difference isn't that different for me like 20 to 30K.
Metas future is questionable. Google’s is not. Meta is still a one man company, google is not.
Right Google is a two men company. Very different from Meta
The founders have very little day to day interest in the company, which is very different from meta.
