I am trying to figure out what to expect as I get out of the navy and any information would be extremely helpful. My information below B.S astrophysics UCSC(3.89 GPA) M.S Computer Science Georgia Tech (in progress will be complete by the time I get out)current gpa 4.0 Rank: 0-3 Time in at end of service: 9yrs Current TC: hard to estimate with tax benefits.. probably somewhere around 100k I have toyed around with getting my PMP as well. My short term plan/goal is to breakout into the civilian sector into a job that provides me the technical background that my civilian peer group already has I have searched the skill bridge website and am interested in Amazons Applied Scientist 1 role, of which there are a few opening for with skill bridge. Or An AWS cleared job as an swe or applied scientist/tech manager( I’m not sure if staying in the cleared space hurts my long term goals) My long term goal would be to be an ML/Research/ SWE manager (preferably at google) as I feel this suits my skill set best and is what I am interested in. Also want to get my PhD in Applied Math in ML stats… you get the picture My questions are: 1)Can anyone provide me with the compensation I should be looking for? 2) do the short term goals align with the long term goals? 3) is there a faster way to get there? 4) is there a way to step straight into a manager role at google/Amazon/MFST…. etc from military with a technical background. 5) is 4 only possible with more senior officers( thinking >=05) Cheers #engineering #software #swe #google #navy #machinelearning #google #amazon
Oh, and don’t do clearance jobs… there’s nothing in it except bureaucracy and outdated tech
That's not entirely true, big cloud lately has some newer interesting roles, in many cases you're not even directly involved but just because a customer requires clearance you may be the one they contact
AWS as swe is a good place to become a manager, if that's what you are looking for and they pay well for 4 years They have good ML teams too No way to step right in
Thanks!Do you have any knowledge of a cleared job holding people back from stepping into the non cleared commercial space later on in their career? I have read mixed information on that.
I would not recommend stepping right in as manager after military into tech companies. Pulling ranks will not be respected and tolerated among fellow engineers, you’d need to shake that military stuff of in a year or two then try and see.
