Moving from Michigan to the Bay area. Anybody who's done the same, any advice? 3 years experience in data science, not that it's relevant.
I'm planning on moving to the Bay Area from Phoenix and wondering the same. Are you in a non-tech role OP?
In a tech role but not in a software company.
The big things are what gets you. Need a major car repair? Twice as much. Want a place to live? It's x3-5 the rent. Want to buy a home? 300k for 20% down, good luck with that...
Curious about the move..Moving for high TC, location or experience? For high TC you can get that in other companies in midwest..
Moving for short term scope of opportunities. Also looking to gain experience in the Bay. Also, the companies in Michigan seem to be very auto dependant and currently the auto industry seems to be at the crossroads.
Also couldn't deal with the cold weather.
Do you have an offer already?
Yeah I'm moving in two weeks
Nice! I agree there's not much else here other than the auto companies.
So many Michiganders out here escaping the weather. You’re gonna do great!
No matter how expensive you think it is here, it’s even more expensive. I moved here from Ohio and was wholly unprepared for the cost of living increase.
Where do you live? What's your TC?
Oakland. salary is 169 with a buncha options and rsus just sitting there. But when I moved here... they offered me 89k and I took it because it sounded like so much for a dumb Midwesterner. (I was making 49k) It was not, and I was extremely poor until we ipo’d and I sold off some stock. I’ve had a few salary corrections since, but still not where I should be.
