I got an offer from micron, it’s a senior position Currently at intel g7 for 3 years. I know I don’t have growth in my team for at least couple of years. Though TC bump is not a lot I’m finding it tough to even get interviews some companies openly said we don’t want people from intel. One HM said this to me, that he has issues with intel folks in the past. Due to the bad taste he doesn’t want to risk with important milestones ahead. Do you think it’s worth to jump ship and slowly find a new role? Or wait for some more time. I don’t think my team will match but I can ask. However my main concern is more than the pay learning and growth both are non existent in my team. And moving out of intel has become practically impossible since we use lots of generic tools and that is making even getting interviews an uphill task for me. Another concern is I’m not sure how is micron. Is it a stable company. Will I have my job for at least an year or 2? How is the culture there. Since I’m single I can sacrifice some wlb for a scope to learn. But i don’t want the environment to be toxic and political, main reason I want out. There maybe scope to negotiate but I don’t have any other offer and I did the rookie mistake gave my expectations upfront they are just meeting that. Inputs much appreciated. None of the above
I’m open what’s the 4th option, you reckon?
Any more details on what you do? Trying to gauge what are other options
Role is the standard cde. We are power delivery team but nothjng close to Sd more on analog front powergoods and board resets. We are involved in Some amount of integration of memories and analog blocks. Issue is everything is specific to intel and more so my team. If I have to brand myself it would be analog design/ power delivery With very limited exposure to either of them. The only designs I ever did are a divider and an ldo. But a lot of scripting, running simulations and validating designs, from pll’S to oscillators, for our spec. It’s haphazard and all over the place. That’s partly the problem, I guess. Anyways hope this answers your question.
You can also think of jumping ships internally as I have heard a lot of people do that and learn some new skills . Then interview based on that. Maybe a 4th option
I was actually trying for that as well. I applied for a bunch positions internally. But I got micron offer before any of the internal things materialised. So as of now I only have this offer. I have a couple of interviews later this week within intel. But I’m not sure if I have enough time to secure a position before I have to accept/reject this offer.
As far as micron is concerned I think they have a good potential in their dram business which is their main product so chances are that the stocks might shoot up. From what I have heard about Micron is that mostly the culture their is silo and opportunity of growing inside org is not much due to internal politics. But having said that if you are a master at people management then you can join and keep interviewing, since you said the potential for growth in your current team is less. From TC point of view I think the offer is on the lower end based on your experience so you may consider negotiating.
Is micron that bad that people are not even commenting on how is micron culturally or organically? Or all these just the TC based responses? Or between intel and micron is there not much to choose from?
The most popular sentiment in the poll is to leave intel. Can you also please, if possible, comment on your reasoning behind the response. Your input and time is much appreciated. Thanks! I’care.
I also recently interviewed and I did get onsite interview from all the FAANG companies. Was able to convert only Apple. I did feel it was harder to convince others to hire if you are borderline but hey I did get calls. I feel it doesn't work to your disadvantage if you are intel but I believe you don't get benefit of doubt. My guess is , you will have similar experience at Micron. I suggest , you stay at Intel work on interviews an up your skill. They certainly give you time to do anything outside your work. Never give up and don't put yourself in a position where you need benefit of doubt
Thanks that makes sense. My experience is similar with big techs but I guess as such my experience is not focused on something specific bunch of this and that and nothing concrete in past 6 years. It’s like jack of all master of none. That made getting calls past the manager/recruiter calls was practically impossible with my experience. In small techs they were looking for people with experience in specific circuits or architectures that made it tough for me. And some had bad experience with analog designers from intel apparently. What I want to do is whatever my next move I need to learn enough so I don’t have to be in this position ever again. I need to move either internally or outside but should move to be able to learn. With that said do you think should I move to micron or wait for something internal? Also May I know what is your domain. Not to see if your experience is different based on that. Want to know so if in future I could ask you for referral:).
I am in embedded space. Having a good experience is a big plus can't comment about micron but intel is not big in analog. You may have tough time finding a right fit internally . But I suggest you decide a target company and prepare for it. If micron is a stepping stone, take it
Not a bad offer from micron. I am g8 in Intel and I got similar offer for a micron E4. I decide to stay since it's not worth it
In this case do you think it’s worth it? I got the offer letter yesterday and I’m thinking of asking my manager to match it. Not sure if my team can match. But is it worth to move if they don’t match?
If you think there is no growth or learning in your current team, it might be good to take the offer and get some industry experience outside Intel. This will help long term career
Move internally
That’s what I’m thinking. I have 2 more days to accept the offer. And my interviews with internal teams are done. I’m hoping to get a g8 in one of the roles. If I get it then I’ll move and then try for an external position later next year.
Ohh I highly doubt you are getting a promo internally.
Thanks guys I have decided to stay with intel. My interviews with internal teams are going great and one of the teams has shown interest in hiring me. Hopefully I can negotiate a higher pay or grade change.
Join some startup. Learning will be better than both the companies.
I did try but most companies I have sent my resume to through recruiters didn’t like my profile and some said the design at intel is very different from what we do. And a couple of startup’s said they only want people from smaller companies. Not sure why.
