Hello everyone, I have Bachelor's with 4.5 YOE including Software engineering and deep learning research. (2 years at Google Research). I have been invited for interview for Applied Machine Learning Scientist II at Microsoft for it's Bing team. Want to know how different it would be from MSR Reseach Scientist role. Do Applied Scientists get to publish and visit conferences often? How much compensation does one think could be negotiated at Bellevue location for this role? Thanks in advance! #microsoft #machinelearning #applied #scientist #google #tech
The position could not be any further to msr positions, the new CVP puts a lot of pressure o. Folks which I personally appreciate, (as he said in one of his QnAs, the goal of the manager is to put enough pressure so folks deliver on time without them feeling they have to leave) Among product teams within Microsoft bing is definitely one of the best teams to do ML in, it taught many other teams how to do ML. Google is a very strong adversary, and it's not obvious how long bing could achieve enough growth. However the skills you get would make you very marketable for other companies (Facebook, amazon, Google) so exits are nice. The pay would not be as nice of those. Actually I wonder why this dude above compares the pay to those, in Ms if you meet expectation each year you get a refresher of 10k stocks, in Google and Facebook depending on your level you get 50k. If you care about salary you should definitely move out of MS after 4 years after the cliff. Regarding publication, I can think of two publications in conferences in a group of 10 DSs in the last two years. You can publish and you might get to go to a conference depending on the budget and deadlines and managers, but in no way that's your priority. The product is. Lots of folks are leaving and CVP is trying to build a team. Objectively, I suggest search in neurips and icml for bing or Microsoft to figure out how many publication on average we submit. Regarding salary, check levels.fyi it's always better to negotiate with an offer in hand) But they need people so you can negotiate hard after you get the position. Sadly I think you have given enough information about yourself to be identified by the hiring manager. (2 years Google research + 4.5 bsc interviewing these days) anyone of us could be your hiring manager ;)
Probably fine even if they’re identified. Good to get info nevertheless.
@nikhil95 Any updates on how the interview went?
I am at Bing now. My experience is Microsoft will match any offer from a FAANG type company initially. They have the most room here to negotiate but one thing to know your refreshers at Microsoft aren’t as strong as Google. We definitely do publish but it really depends on your team. The main difference between MSR and Bing is your priority. In bing your goal is make product impact, in msr its still more on paper publishing. Within my team we have published at NeuraIPS, ICML, and a few others. So i think its very possible. DM me if you have any more questions. Happy to help.
