I'm an upcoming new grad who should be receiving an offer for Redmond soon. I starting new from living with my parents and had a question about health insurance. Here's what Microsoft site says, Medical, dental, and vision care: "Enjoy the comfort of industry-leading health care coverage for you and your family, with no monthly paycheck deductions." I'm budgeting out my salary and expenses and stuff. Can I just completely ignore health insurance? If you're working at Microsoft, did you have any health insurance expenses what so ever? Including everything (yearly checkups, dentist appointments, etc.). Are the on-campus doctors checkups free or just subsidized? Thanks! #microsoft #newgrad #healthinsurance

Most people go with a high-deductible plan (free) with a Microsoft contribution to an HSA. If your annual healthcare usage is a yearly physical, the cost will be near 0 (or perhaps negative). Otherwise, cost will be a function of healthcare utilization.
That's really helpful thanks! So if I do that plan do I need to worry about any of the deductibles or anything? I've never had my own health insurance before and it seems pretty complicated with out of pocket and all that.
Long story short, for anything outside of basic preventative care (yearly physical, flu shot, etc), expect to pay yourself. Theoretically, the HSA contribution from Microsoft is supposed to cover some of this. However, most keep it invested and then pay with cash (for tax purposes). Once you have paid up to the deductible, then the insurance kicks in and will pay a fraction of the cost. Finally, there's a max out of pocket expense which you will never have to pay more than. If you reach it, the insurance will cover your expenses 100%.
