Currently at another large tech company that is very laid back (which has made me super bored) and recently received an offer to boomerang back to Microsoft as a level 64. The position boasts well over $210k base, $250k+ in stock, annual refreshers of $0-$90k and a potential sign on bonus of $20k-$30k. I come with 5 YoE and am partially questioning if I can fit the shoes for this role. A little over a year ago was I at Microsoft as a level 61. Is this jump doable? Do I ask for level 63 or stick with it and play it out? I'm confident in my technical ownership abilities, but believe this role was eventually going to lead into mentoring more junior engineers, which I'm fine with but only have a little bit of experience with. Levels.fyi reports that most people at this level are 10+ years. UPDATE: Accepted a high paying L63 offer: $190k base $200k stock $40k sign on/2 yrs 0-30% bonus 3%-5% merit 0-$64k refreshers TC: 288k-300k (ish at the peak) TC: $320k YoE: 5 #tech #microsoft #offer
Try it for 1 year? It’s hard to get L64 at 5 YOE. Do you have master or phd?
I do not
Congrats on boomerang 😁 inspiring success story
That’ll end well
Sticking it out? Or asking for a down level?
Congrats OP! As you know, 64 is terminal so many folks just stay at that level for life. I don't have any real advice, except the following thoughts for you: 1) Do you like the product area? Expectations for a bored L61 are very different from the expectations for an L64. At that new level, you should never show that haha. Ensure you like the area so you can be motivated and give your best. You'll need to be comfortable for x org discussions and eng leadership where needed 2) Do you feel a good vibe from the manager? That's prob the next best thing. Bonus point if they've previously promoted principals or can back you up and help you grow. 3) Did you discuss with future teammates? How many are stuck at L63 or were recently promoted to 64? They might be the ones giving you a hard time if you work directly with them. However this is not too important (see last note below). You shouldn't worry about how long it took others at that level. Everyone has their stories and life's unfair unfortunately. Now, remember that either these teammates or their peers interviewed you, and they allowed you to join at that level so don't worry too much and give your best. Congrats again!
Hey thanks for the reassuring comment :D yeah it’s for a pretty neat team in the Xbox Org which is where my passion lies so that’s cool. The manager is new and so is the team, but they’re working on a pretty high vis platform. From what I gathered it sounds like they were trying to fill the shoes of the previous guy that was there that I guess kinda built and invented this product? This role will require a lot of reaching out and collaborating with the various game studios so I’m not necessarily scared of that portion; I guess that just overall I won’t be able to compete technically?
Ah I see. That sounds like an amazing opportunity. Good thing the team is new so you all, especially the manager, can bring fresh minds to the problem, and learn from each others. Regarding competition, that's a fair point but as long as you like the PA, the team and feel good (especially with that 2 level bump), you should be able to give a good fight. Here's my summary you can keep for your imposter syndrome :D: a) You've been here before so you know how this ship operates b) You passed the interview 2x c) You are excited about this product area d) New manager, new team, clean slate, you are all ready to shake things e) You got pushed to a higher level inbjust one year? Will it be challenging? Yes but it's a great problem to have at 5 years vs being stuck at 7 in a lower level. Rise to the opportunity You'll be fine. Congrats again, break a leg!
And this is why Microsoft comp models are totally broken.
100%, the best promo you'll ever get it leaving
Congrats, good for 5 Yoe. Few azure mgrs are toxic AF. Hopefully you join a good team
That’s an amazing offer. I’m stuck at 61 with 8 yoe. Like wtf !
Typical for Microsoft. Just try to get out.
Which location is this TC for? Midwest?
Redmond, WA. Fully remote
Then why pay Seattle TC
61 to 64 in 1yr is too good. Did recruiter or anyone through the process asked you about your previous level?
They did not, tho I'm sure a manager could pull up previous connects ya?
