Microsoft L67 Engineering Manager seeking external opportunities in Seattle

I am L67 Engineering Manager in Microsoft with TC of 500K. I work in Office 365, and consider myself fairly knowledgeable on distributed technologies. I am looking for similar opportunities in Seattle/Bellevue area. Thinking of trying in FB, Oracle, Salesforce and Google. Perhaps try few companies in first phase, and others a little later. For the interview preparation, I am focusing on 1. Coding questions 2. System design questions 3. Behavioral questions 4. Going deep on key organizational and technical problems based on resume content I have few questions a. Is this level of coverage adequate for interviews? b. What would be target level in FB – M1/M2/D1 and TC? c. What to expect from Oracle cloud group in terms of TC? d. Is Oracle cloud really going to be healthy in the next 5 years given AWS and Azure? e. Is Salesforce a good choice to look for opportunities?

At FB your comp can be matched at M1. D1 is a stretch; you’d have to be a pretty convincing motherfucker to pass that bar. This should give you an idea for your range. But really; the world needs fewer managers, not more. Go as an IC.

That cracked me up - "pretty convincing motherfucker"! Lol

FB in particular needs more managers in fact. I am always entertained with engineers who automatically assume managers, PMs and in fact all other roles are inferior to them and those are the only group who make contributions.

Keep in mind about Oracle Cloud - most of the “leaders” in the Cloud division would have been say a L6 @ Amazon / L64/65 at Microsoft. They have promoted themselves every year and have fancy titles of VP but in terms of emotional maturity and experience - Imagine the scenario where you pick a mid senior engineer from your team and make that person your manager or your skip manager or a partner immediately. Imagine how things will be in terms of long term thinking, thinking big and decision making- and that’s how it is here in Oracle. You have to drink the cool aid and be part of the “circle”. I am waiting to boomerang back to Amazon.

At Facebook you would be consider for higher M1 or lower M2, depending how big is your org (do you manage managers) and how you do on interviews (especially people management and project execution interviews).

Thanks for the feedback so far. Do share tips on interview that I stated in the original post. Also what would be matching level/title in Oracle cloud and TC?
