Microsoft Linux = Microsoft + Ubuntu

If Microsoft bought Ubuntu and created a Linux distribution with Enterprise/AD integration, the Windows 10 GUI (same interface, same base apps, just as smooth to interact with in every way), and ported over their most popular applications to work beautifully with the distribution (Office, Outlook, Exchange, Visual Studio, Visio, SharePoint, Power BI, Azure integrations, DirectX, etc), would you use it?

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiit

Oracle aye-o Oct 31, 2018

Only if it was Unity Desktop based.

Qualtrics aJOl73 Oct 31, 2018

Unix or did you actually mean unity

Microsoft bloooooood Oct 31, 2018

They actually meant Unity. Noob.

Microsoft hshajxbsba Oct 31, 2018

No, because: 1. They would screw things up in the process. 2. Windows GUI is awful and too limited.

Microsoft ABACADABAC Oct 31, 2018

Presumably you could install any shell you wanted, just like with Linux today

Microsoft strUName Oct 31, 2018

Like point 1. Dislike point 2.

Microsoft funkuup Oct 31, 2018

I could be convened... Depends on if they respect the current platform. What I do not want is Ubuntu:Windows distribution - a version of Ubuntu that is niesh to Microsoft. Embrace open standards and existing libraries, and don't over engineer πŸ‘πŸΎ

Microsoft Tier 1 Oct 31, 2018

We already have PowerShell running on Ubuntu. Now we need UWP.

Microsoft Tier 1 Oct 31, 2018

But what about all the apps in the store...?

Microsoft wbYt28 Oct 31, 2018

All four of them?

Microsoft kβ€” Oct 31, 2018

How different is Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Subsystem_for_Linux) from what you are asking? It has all your user-space packages (shells, compilers, editors, and anything you can install from Debian/Ubuntu/OpenSUSE reps) minus the X server. (One can separately install X server for windows). Of course, it runs on the Windows kernel but for most parts, it’s not visible to the applications. Oh, and by the way, you also get to SSH in/out of Windows with WSL (although, one can also use the SSH support in the newer Windows 10 releases).

VMware BobbleHat Oct 31, 2018

Because it is built by people that think it is the same

Microsoft kβ€” Oct 31, 2018

Care to elaborate?

Microsoft kalimiro Oct 31, 2018

I'm at Microsoft and I'm using Ubuntu as my primary workstation. Works just great.

Uber jHu5B3 Oct 31, 2018

Windows 10 GUI... Even Linux desktop is better than that shit!!!

Microsoft wbYt28 Oct 31, 2018

Linux doesn't have a GUI, genius. Depends hugely on the distro.

Microsoft _🐧 Oct 31, 2018

Doesn't depend on the distro. Depends on the desktop environment.

T-Mobile C53kwl9 Oct 31, 2018

A Linux distro with lots of proprietary Microsoft tech and software but fully compatible with the Debian ecosystem 100%?

Amazon GQXY27 Oct 31, 2018

Sure, I'd use it as long as they did not nerf the kernel or userspace
