Currently a TPM at Google in the Bay Area. Just got an offer from Microsoft for a Senior Software Engineer and need help with salary negotiations. Seems low to me even considering that Washington State pays less than California. What are y'all's thoughts? ***Addendum*** I see that the SWE offer has a lot of takers. I'd like to know some of y'all's motivation. ***Addendum 2*** They came back with the following numbers: Base: 184k Stock: 140k (35k per year) Sign-on: 25k (Unchanged)
At least no state tax.
Only if you move to WA
Is 63 true senior for Microsoft? Seems super low tc for senior at a tier 1 company.
Are you rusty with coding and got the lower end of the spectrum?
Perhaps. I'd imagine that I'm not bad but also not the strongest coder in town. I think that I did well in most of the coding and the system design.
Why do you want to go back to engineering?
Stay at Google man what are you doing
I really want to get back to engineering and Google makes that process unnecessarily difficult.
Right!? He’s crazy. Never seen anyone run towards the peanut farms
Your actual TC is only 200k (without sign on). 🥜
Is that the new levels.fyi 😐 TPM at google === Sr. Engineer at Microsoft
Damn. I feel bad for people who have to look up to a freaking PM for engineering guidance and standards now. I will never work at Microsoft
Current level 63 at MS. The RSU and bonus you listed are the middle payouts for that band. You should counter offer with triple or quadruple that amount so that you can negotiate up to at least double for stock grant in my opinion.
You should be able to get 100K RSU for sign on. Maybe 120K.
These are great insights. I did already ask for a higher base and a much higher stock grant. I didn't ask for a substantially higher sign-on though...am I leaving a lot on the take there?
Wow after Microsoft sign on is done, that’s literally new grad tc for a senior position. sorry not ripping on you, but Microsoft.
That's what I thought as well, hence my coming to the Blind crew.
You can take the Microsoft position for the title. Then hop again in ~2 years for 2x tc
63 is not really senior. That’s why the offer is low
63 is senior. So is 64, but at 64 you are expected to be a lead and direct others.
That’s why I said “not really” - it’s just title inflation but the pay band should tell you no external senior would join at 63
OP can I dm you I’m tryna go the opposite way 😂
😆 Sure. Hit me up.
Op, what product/org? Be careful with azure, you may get a bump in salary but you may have to do double the work compared to google.
