Microsoft PIP System

Decided to leave Amazon after my 3 friends got piped and due to PE and new SDM behaviour. Thinking to interview for Microsoft, WHAT IS THE PIP PROCESS IN MICROSOFT, In Amazon it's a fixed percentage (10-20) to be piped/ year. Amazon L5 YOE: 2.5 YOE:6.5 TC: 200K

We don’t really have a formal PIP process AFAIK. Plus even if you have a bad year, it might take many many months for your manager to draw up the documents needed to justify letting you go, giving you more than enough time to turn things around. And the typical MSFT manager is much more considerate than the typical AMZN manager.

Can confirm. Used to work at MS. I once thought I was on PIP after a crap year performance wise, but nothing came of it. My manager spoke to me about things he wanted me to improve on, which I guess I accomplished - he was a good manager, one of many I had there. Getting fired at MS seems difficult.

The closest thing I saw in my time at Microsoft to a PIP process was an informal up-or-out policy for pay grades below L63 (Senior SDE or the equivalent: SDE I is L59 or L60, and SDE II is L61 or L62). At these bands, the typical promotion velocity is one paygrade every 1-3 years. If you're stuck in the same paygrade for much longer than 3 years, and your manager is supposed to either get you ready for promotion or get rid of you to free up a slot for someone with more growth potential. But that's only really a thing for L62 and below: at L63 and above, the company doesn't mind your career plateauing if you don't. I don't remember hearing about any coworkers at Microsoft actually getting fired or formally PIPed. Instead, the usual process seems to be to get "managed out of the organization". Higher performers get more recognition, promotions, raises, and stock awards, and get preferential assignment to more interesting and prestigious tasks. Lower performers get the opposite, and generally either shape up or start looking for another job.

Low performing candidates get less annual bonus . If it’s repeated for few years, then they might get Pip’ed

Microsoft wondering! Dec 16, 2020

PIP is almost non-existent, even if you meet expectations you will be safe

You mean “don’t meet” right?

Interviewing isnt risky but accepting an offer is hundred percent risky! Stay away for your mental wellbeing.

Microsoft is an engineering tech company. Amazon is best managed company. Culture is obviously poles apart.

When I left Microsoft 2 years ago, the "helping others succeed" part seemed to be lacking. After being in the middle of some competition between 2 principal engineers (one of which refused to review my code because they didn't agree with the project), I decided to look elsewhere.

In Microsoft, you get rarely a PIP. Worst case, bonus becomes 0 (which is big part of your compensation) or you end up in a place where layoffs are happening.

Hi, does this still apply? Hard to get pip in Microsoft?
