Before I left, they offered a sudden promotion to partner, after years postponing it. There wouldn't even be a salary increase, because I would become a partner and get a potential additional bonus during the next review (which Google covered in the base salary!). Now, people who have been partners for many years and with tenure of almost 3 decades are laid off by surprise? Weren't partners supposed to be included in company decisions? https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7089305415145947136/ #layoff
Perhaps this partner wasn't delivering anymore and they either had to send them back to Principal or lay them off. Partners aren't involved in every decision.
Hope you also read the comments. The point here is: there are some new VPs and CVPs at Microsoft that came from Amazon, bringing in the culture of evaluating performance based on the last few weeks and cliques (not that Microsoft didn't have its cliques already). You lose a great manager and people notice the direction the company is going... Those cannot be replaced by AI.
great managers… true for G maybe 😅
Lolwa
Partners need to deliver immense impact for their role. You will not get a million dollars if you can't bring in 10 million to the company.
He’s probably been coasting and providing lower value than his comp, since he was there for 3 decades. Loyalty does exist to some degree (through relationships), so he probably got the better end of the deal in the end and also got rich.
Figma, there is a saying not to say anything if you cant say something good. How do you know he was coasting,? It could also be politics at that level. Even if this is an anonymous forum please be kind in your words. We never know when we ll be in that situation as this employee. Life is fickle. God bless all
You think being promoted to Partner is bad? Try being promoted to Customer.
I'm curious, why do they call it "partner"? Is it equivalent of distinguished engineer or something? Always thought it's a peculiar title.
Principal ->partner ->distinguished. Think of as senior principal if you may since everyone and their grandma is an principal engineer here
The partner band contains partners, GMs, and DEs. A DE is (level-wise) like a VP but it’s an exclusive club at MSFT: fewer than 150 I believe, you have to be voted in. (Correct me if I’m wrong)
Consider it a divorce instead of layoff.
Grown apart
The one who is about to be let go isn't included. What is the point
