I don’t think referral vs direct application matter that much at Microsoft (especially if the referral is from some random employee that is not from the same/a similar team)

It matters..
I have applied 3 times directly but didn't get any call then I applied through referral and got call within a week

Then I would say it differs vastly from team to team (assuming you were referred by some one random that was not really a part of the team or affiliated with them)
