Why does Microsoft ask about whether I am a homeowner or renter? Does it affect the benefits they provide during the move (I opted for assisted relocation over lump sum)? I'm literally both - I own a home (that I let my parents live in) and I rent down the street. Thanks.
Typically there are some additional benefits if you’re a homeowner; most notably, a ‘house hunting trip’ to your new location ahead of your final relo date.
Don't they do that for renters too? How else am I supposed to find a new place to rent?
I don’t think so. I just did a relo and when they initially had me setup as a renter; the house hunting trip wasn’t included. Pretty sure they said they switched me to the homeowner plan to get it. (I relo-ed as a homeowner previously so I knew the benefit existed and knew I wanted it)
There are trade offs too b/c then you won’t get any sort of lease break assistance, etc
Don’t know if they do this at all levels but for a friend (pm lead) his relo package covered closing costs for selling his house.
Not selling house so I guess I'll go with the renter approach since that's my living condition atm.
+1 for this. I think I was told this too. I took lumpsum nevertheless since I was renting.
Speaking from personal experience, unless you have kids, take the lump sum. The relocation team is a real hassle and took a lot of my time to get things right
The lump sum didn't make much sense financially even though I'm single. The lump sum was only about $12k and the assisted is $5k + moving car + flight + 2 months temporary housing + helping find apartment after that.
What level are you?
If you own a home and move, they will give you a package that helps pay towards your closing costs if you end up buying a home in the US. If you are renting they only help pay for lease breaks
Cool, ty!

I've been asked that.. Only reasons I can think of are - some companies give lease break fees if renting.. If moving internationally maybe if you're a homeowner it makes a better case for non immigrant visa?? I don't know the answer.. Just speculating..
That's a good point. I'm relocating across the country but not internationally.
