Microsoft Title Confusion (Eng Leadership Ladder)

I have been seeing Microsoft titles go from Engineering Manager to Group Engineering Manager to Director of Engineering. From looking at LinkedIn, people seem to be using these titles interchangeably. Specifically, how does a L67 Principal Group Engineering Manager title differ from a Principal Engineering Director? Can someone please clarify? Thanks. YOE: 14 TC: 314k #microsoft #levels

Director is a fake title

“Engineering manager” is usually an m1 with anywhere from 5-12 reports. “Group Engineering manager” is usually an m2 with an org of 25-50. “Director” isn’t super common in product groups, particular in last 2 years that they’ve started using an official “vp” title. Key thing to know is how big was their org, and were they a manager of managers?
